Altered Box – ReneaBouquet May Swap!

Altered ‘cigar’ box for the May 2019 ReneaBouquet Facebook Swap!

**Someone mentioned the word ‘tutorial,’ and I’ll try that here as best I can…

I do have a computer and a webcam and everything, BUT in early 2018 the power supply on my computer fried itself…I mean there were sparks and everything! And well my computer works well enough-ish, I’m pretty sure the motherboard took some damage because it hasn’t been quite right since (and my webcam tends to overpower it now). All this happened right before we moved almost 2300 miles, so getting my computer back to 100% hasn’t been a priority! (Although dealing with it being like 85% is starting to get on my nerves A LOT!)**

Ok…the short and sweet “tutorial.”

I used Art Glitter Adhesive to hold the papers to the wood. The lid has the 13 @rts paper, and the bottom is only wrapped on the sides with the Hip Kit Club paper (the bottom of the box is just white gesso). I used quite a bit of glue, basically “painting” a thin layer where it would be touching the paper and burnishing it down with the edge of my bone folder and some elbow grease. And I let it dry a full day before moving on to the next layer!

I did not gesso my paper, gesso is wet and I found that to be a risk I didn’t want to take! I used Krylon Workable Fixative as a protective coating before gluing down the Mould pieces, flowers, 7 Gypsies doilies, and ReneaBouquet Grid Beautiful Board. All of these parts, except the Beautiful Board which has it’s own coating, needed gesso before the next step.

Next I did the bits of embossing.

Now, the really wet, “please let the glue and Krylon work their best,” part! First, I had to spritz water where I was planning on adding all those Lindy’s & Jaquard powders, then I had to add more water on top of the powders! I did heat dry, and there is more than one layer of powders (Between the layers I used more Krylon Workable Fixative so there would be no reactivation of the lower levels!). I did the same technique along the sides of the bottom, except there was only one layering of powders. And, because I heat dry the powders, it reheated the embossing powder which caused it to push it’s way through in spots!!

Now, to help everything withstand being used, there is three (I think) coats of (Mod Podge) acrylic sealer. Some is glossy, some is matte. Yes, I did it that way on purpose!

After all that was dry I added the feet, hinges, and latch, then the butterflies and cabachon.

*The cabachon is a 50mm dome on top of a piece from Tim Holtz’s Botanical Layers & a ReneaBouquet butterfly, adhered with JudiKins Diamond Glaze. The edges are done with Finnabair waxes, White Gold & Peacock.*

On the inside of the box I used Mod Podge Vintage to glue the Prima tissue paper in place then let that dry. After the Mod Podge dried I randomly added spots of color with the Finnabair Waxes and coated the edge of the lid and bottom with Finnabair wax. And everything is coated in acrylic sealer to (hopefully) add durability.

“Dream” – Altered Artists Palette – May Creative Embellishments Mood Board Challenge!

I had always wanted to do an altered palette, and when it showed up in the May Mixed Media Kit from Tres Jolie I was overjoyed!! And, it just so happened that the paints included with the kit word perfectly with the Creative Embellishments Challenge this month!

The mood board for the Creative Embellishments May Challenge!

I rubbed some Prima/Finnabair Metallique Waxes on the fairies from Creative Embellishments.
I found “Dream” at my local Dollar Tree, and it was mirrored. First I sprayed it with some Krylon Original Primer, then I added the Pink-o do Mayo and Halo Pink Gold paint (drying between colors!!) and soaked them in water so the colors could pool together however they wanted!

        Imagine (4"x12" Canvas)

“Imagine” created for the Mixed Media Place April (2019) Challenge!

I LOVED the colors of the mood board this month, and I’m not even the biggest fan of pinks! Besides the colors, the mushroom put me in a fantasy mindset, when for me equals fairies!!

I don’t have a lot of rhyme or reason with this canvas, and originally I had hoped to recreate the mushroom…somehow…but as it so often happens, the project took on a life of it’s own! The pink tree is actually a photo I took, ran through Photoshop, printed on regular paper, and transferred! It didn’t transfer quite how I had planned, so I had to get “creative” with the Shimmerz paste! 😂

The fairy was black chipboard, but I used some white gesso before painting it with the Pink-Blue Opal Magic and adding a T-H-I-N coat of the Peacock Metallique Wax!

        Flight of Fancy Canvas

My 8×10 canvas for the March More Than Words Main Challenge! Fantasy + Wings

This month the main challenge over on the More Than Words Blog was to be inspired by “Fantasy & Wings.” For me, fantasy always makes me think of fairies. If it’s fantasy, there’s going to be some kind of fae involved! This month I also had pastes on my mind, and I happen to have a nice set of Finnabair’s Fantasy Rust Effect Paste…which goes with the fact that I also love using purple, teal (turquoise), and blue together…especially with fantasy!

I may not have had a fairy that I could get to “fit” on this canvas, and I have a few different chipboard fairies, I did have a handy-dandy fairy door from Creative Embellishments! I also happened to have the Astral Pink Butterflies from ReneaBouquets, and the color on them is

just beautiful…and perfect for my piece!

More Than Words Main Challenge – March 2019

I love the cells that the paint pour created along this edge!
Baked Texture – Patina Oxide on the door & Ancient Amber on the leafy frame!
I love, love, LOVE these butterflies … I think I may need to make a stockpile!

**For the record – no, everything wasn’t dry yet, I was running out of month!!**

        Transition

“Transition” – My entry to the February Mixed Media Place Challenge
When I first saw the challenge board for the February Mixed Media Place Challenge I was immediately drawn to the mushroom. I don’t know why, but I love mushrooms…artistically. For food I can tolerate them to an extent. A very small extent! (except the white ‘button’ mushrooms, those are just a big ol’ NO!). Okay, that’s all besides the point, so back to my canvas.
I loved the color of the mushroom, and I am so over winter that I had no desire to do a winter themed project, but I also love the sepia of the top left photo, the close up of the water drop (I think that’s what it is) in the top center photo, and the color of the leaves of the top right photo. The mushroom and the three top photos were my main inspiration for my project. At first I had thought I would somehow use mushrooms, but after I did the paint pour I realized I needed something more. I don’t know how I came around to gears and rust paste, but it was something like this:
“I like the sepia and gold leaves, they look old. Those leaves look metallic. Rust is old. I have rust pastes. I also have some gold wax…and some metal flowers…and I made a bunch of resin gears & butterflies to have on hand…”
Basically, I think in run-on and/or incomplete sentences. The thoughts just go sometimes, and this time I went them!
I added the cabochon’s because the white space needed something, but I didn’t need more color! (Plus, they are what I thought of with the top middle photo!)

        Rattan Heart

Rattan Heart created for the Creative Embellishments February Challenge

Over on the Creative Embellishments Blog the February Challenge was a color challenge, and this heart is what I came up with!

To color the rattan heart I used three different sprays, Shimmerz “Pretty In Pink” and “Sweetheart,” and I watered down the “Rose-Gold” Prima paint to make the third spray. After they were dry I had to add some lace…because Creative Embellishments had it as a twist, and I’m not one to “skip” on twists!

It was after I had the lace on I decided to add make the inner and outer edges a bit darker with the “Rose Gold” Icing Paste!

After that is was a matter of arranging the flowers and working in the chipboard from Creative Embellishments!

For the Corner Flourish 4 (which has been cut apart) I put on a coat of white gesso, sprayed it with Shimmerz “Ruby”…twice, then I put on a layer of “Aged Mahogany” Distress Oxide and spritzed it with water! The berries were just coated in a layer of “Rustic Brown” paint, no gesso, because I wanted the paint to soak in some to “dull” it a little.

        Altered Box

An altered box I did for the Reneabouquets Feb 2019 Valentintes/Romantic Mood Board Challenge over on Facebook!

I started with the Shimmerz Raspberry Sherbet for the lower half of the box then used their Salt of the Earth for the upper half & lid, and left it to dry overnight. When I work up the next morning I felt that something was missing, so I pulled out my new Prima Indian Pink wax, my Nuvo Mousse, and my jar of Iridescent Glaze, and I sat down to ponder what to do with it all!

Eventually I decided to put the Indian Pink wax on top of the Raspberry Sherbet, I added a middle band of color with the Nuvo Mousse, and I put the Iridescent Glaze on the remaining white Salt of the Earth. After it was all dry I was arranging the flowers on the lid and kept thinking I should add something subtle, which is where the lattice stenciling came from. Then I finished arranging my flowers, sprinkled on some glitter glass, and added the “Astrial Pink” butterfly from ReneaBouquets for some extra color.

I received the January Mixed Media Kit from Tres Jolie and was just in love with the shadow box! (Yes, part of the kit! Kim puts EXCELLENT kits together!! Tres Jolie has a monthly scrapbooking, mixed media, and card, tags, & more kit. No, I’m not reimbursed in any way to promote the kits, I’m a regular customer who happens to love the kits!)

Anyhow…the kit also came with purple paint & purple flowers…(and other items)…
Then I saw the January Mood Board Challenge at Mixed Media Place and I thought to myself, “Huh, that works!”

Mixed Media Place January 2019 Mood Board

After I primed the shadow box (Kilz spray primer because I didn’t want to use a paintbrush on chicken wire!) I put on a coat of DecoArt “Lavender” Acrylic Paint. After that was dry I applied a thin coat of Prima’s “Frozen Berries.” The chicken wire was sprayed with Ayeeda Mist “Patina Bronze”by 13 @rts. The doily is a Creative Embellishments doily that I used black gesso on then painted with Prima’s “Rustic Brown.”

After all that it was just a matter of playing with placement until I thought it “looked right.” (All the products I used are listed at the bottom of this post.)

        All lit up!

         Here are some close ups:

        Let It Snow!

I came up with this project using the mood board over at Creative Embellishments January Challenge!

I just went through my supplies with winter and snowflakes on my mind, and hoped for the best! LOL!!

For the background I glued down some ReneaBouquet Beautiful Board – Beautiful Bits – Snowflakes & a Beautiful Board Snowflake Accent, then coated it all in Prima Royal Blue & Powder Blue Rust Effect Pastes. For the white paste I first put down some TCW Modeling Paste, then I topped it with more TCW Modeling Paste mixed with some Prima Paper Texture Paste + 13 @rts White Ayeeda Ink + some 13 @rts Magic Power. (All because I didn’t have a white grit paste like I thought I did!)

I received the chipboard clock in a swap back in July 2018, I just coated it in “Rustic Brown” Prima Metallique paint and the pearls in a PocketLetter swap in January 2018.

The feathers are from Creative Embellishments, coated in gesso and “White Pearl” Prima Metallique Paint.

The dark blue flower is a Prima flower, and the white flowers are Tim Holtz. The light blue flowers, the butterfly, and the Chunky Glitter Glass are all from ReneaBouquet!
