Denim Junk Journal

A junk journal I created using some denim from a pair of old jeans, bits of lace and string, old sheets of music, paper I dyed with inks and/or tea, and the “Denim & Girls” Collection by Maja Design (that came in the July 2019 Tres Jolie Kit Club Scrapbooking Kit).

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Sometimes, just sometimes, I feel the need to do a project that has no real purpose. That’s where art journaling comes in. In this case I wanted to use/remember this quote by Former First Lady Michelle Obama from her book Becoming:

Now I think it’s one of the most useless questions an adult can ask a child—What do you want to be when you grow up? As if growing up is finite. As if at some point you become something and that’s the end.

I think it is probably a good thing art journaling doesn’t have to have a purpose, because this looks nothing like what I was hoping for. But it did let me just experiment, which can be helpful when suffering from a mental road block. Basically, I was going for something shinier and dreamier, but I’m okay with the end result.

My only inspiration, besides the quote, came from this months Creative Embellishments Color Challenge. It helps that my favorite color is blue! I even managed to get the twist in (clouds or waves) when I stenciled on some clouds!

I can’t guarantee a video. I recorded as I went, but my computer was acting up. In the end it actually decided it wanted to restart while in the process of recording. The last step is actually not recorded because it involved texture paste & paint and I couldn’t wait for my computer to stop being temperamental.

I, more or less, know what is recorded, the problem is my computer cooperating during editing.

While I see how the video is willing to come along, here are some photos!

Altered Notebook – June ReneaBouquet Swap

Altered Notebook – June ReneaBouquets Facebook Swap

The notebook is a 9″x6″ notebook I found at Wal-Mart.

I’ve owned the Prima Wildflowers Pillar for a few years now, and have been waiting to use that big, orange hibiscus on just the right project! Apparently the “right project” does eventually come along! LOL

ReneaBouquets always seems to have just the right pieces for so many of my projects.

This flamingo is made with Amazing Cast Resin & a Wilton, silicon, candy mold!

Some more “waiting for the perfect project” items I had been hoarding. Studio Calico was the first crafting supply subscription I used! I love them, and in a perfect world I’d be a subscriber to ALL clubs I could find, but since I don’t have Jeff Bezos’ money, I try different clubs, one at a time!

And here is a process video if you’d like to see the high speed version of assembly!

**I made the cut file for the “replacement” cover using Silhouette Studio.

    1st Altered Book

I had been keeping this generic black pleather journal around for quite some time but I always knew it was missing something. That something was apparently me getting the idea to alter it, originally inspired by various “Steampunk” journals I had seen. The most I had ever written in it was my name for “This book belongs to:” and a couple of thoughts on the first two pages. That was it!! Now I am going to make it something more. Over the past year I have taken a major turn toward traditional healing a.k.a. herbal healing. I got tired of seeing “if you or a loved on took this medicine and is now dead or permanently messed up you may be entitled to compensation.” Money isn’t going to return quality of life. Anyhow, being someone who is required to have some sort of medication on a daily basis I went back to nature, and this is going to be my “recipe” book.

This is the new front cover. Some fabric flowers that I used Tim Holtz Distress Ink on … they used to be much brighter colors! A couple of resin black roses, some Tim Holtz gears, a few brads … Also, I did make that leather Triquetra on my own! I cut the slits on the background leather and wove the other strips of leather through. I am currently adding some silk ribbon embroidery to the cover as well. And yes, I am covering the pleather with leather … well suede.

Inside the front cover with my “This book belongs to:” window in the fabric. I had to add this fabric because after all the treatment to the pages and spine I wanted to give a clean finish.

This is at the very center of the book. Just some rub-ons for the flowers, some self-stick butterfly boarder, and some tissue tape.

Blank pages. It was a long process of spraying and drying. And to help with the drying and aging I utilized my oven … and melted the glue in the spine … but I like it better this way, it’s more aged.
