Tres Jolie Kit Club – Mecha Steam Queen – July 2022 Mixed Media Kit

Hey, y’all! Have you checked out the July Mixed Media Kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club yet? It has some fabulous Finnabair Tissue Paper, heavy black gesso, and Pixie Dust, along with some Lindy’s Magical’s, DecoArt Crackle Paint, Tres Jolie Chipboard, and a canvas board to get you started!

I was fortunate enough to receive the newest Finnabair Moulds in the mail the same day I was starting my project, so I have that fantastic Mecha Moth on here, along with a ton of other Finnabair mould pieces from both old and new designs!

I used a couple of stencils from previous kits with the crackle paint from the kit and some Finnabair “Crushed Crystals” Jewel Effect Paste. Then I loaded up and layered up all my colors using some of the Liquid Acrylic Paints from February’s Mixed Media Kit and the Lindy’s from this month’s kit.

Check my video out to see what I did to put this Mecha Steam Queen together!

Video:

Jul-22-MMKit-06 Jul-22-MMKit-08

To get my background started, I layered it up with some of the “Bavarian Blue” Lindy’s Magical’s from the kit and (part of) one sheet of the Finnabair tissue paper, using my Liquitex Matte Medium to adhere the paper. After I had my initial layer, I tore the remainder of the sheet of tissue paper into strips and layered them up, only adding the Magical Shaker as the initial bottom layer under all the tissue paper.

After my matte medium was fully dried, I came in with my stencils. I used my “Flourish” stencil with the crackle paint from this month’s kit, and my “Screwed” stencil with some “Crushed Crystal’s” Jewel Effect Paste. I just used my finger to dab on and blend a thin layer of the crackle paint along the edges and in the corners of the canvas and to soften the edges of the stenciling some.

After my “Flourish” stenciling was dry, I added a layer of clear gesso to help protect my crackle paint (it was going to be a wet, messy job!) and to make my subsequent layers of mediums easier to flow and roll around along the top of the stenciling and between the cracks. Because of the nature of the Jewel Effect Paste – when it dries it is more like the matte medium – I didn’t need to add any gesso to it.

With all of my background mediums dry, I come in with the “Bavarian Blue” Lindy’s, sprinkle it on, and really water it down so it will flow between all of the cracks. From here on out, I don’t let my mediums air dry on my background, I use my heat guns to make sure everything stays where I put it!

Jul-22-MMKit-03 Jul-22-MMKit-10 Jul-22-MMKit-17

On all of my various mould pieces, I coated them with black gesso – either the heavy gesso from the kit or my “regular” gesso on the more detailed pieces. If you only have the heavy gesso and want to get it into detailed areas a little easier, you can just mix in a little water to thin it some. After my gesso layers dried, I coated everything in some TCW “Sterling Silver” Modeling Paste. It says “Sterling Silver,” but it is more like sterling silver that has begun to tarnish – and I love it!

I used my 3D Matte Gel to hold my Mecha Steam Queen together before adding her gesso and modeling paste. I can say, all I knew was I really wanted to use the new Mecha Moth, and everything was built around that. I keep a bunch of pre-made mould pieces handy, so I grabbed them up and started playing around when suddenly I saw how fantastic my “Queens of Steam” piece looked on that big moth body! I added another layer of wings from the “Nocturnal Insects” Mould, and gave her a “Clockfaces” crown.

While I let that 3D Matte Gel set up, I went to work on deciding which gears I wanted to use and picked one of the “Baroque Frames” to set behind my Mecha Steam Queen. On my gears, after the modeling paste was dry, I added some “Texture Powder” to rough them up a bit, added some extra color to them using the two Lindy’s Magical’s from the kit, and I added some “Ink Black” Liquid Acrylic Paint. On my mould pieces, I allowed the mediums to air dry to allow everything to mix and flow together naturally. On the frame, I just mixed some of the “Bavarian Blue” Lindy’s with some Liquid Color Fluid Medium to keep it from being able to reactivate after it was dry.

Jul-22-MMKit-18 Jul-22-MMKit-11

To build up my background, I started with some corrugated cardboard (I just happened to find “hidden” behind a pile of other *stuff* – it must have fallen down some time ago and I forgot to fetch it then!). Anyhow, I used the heavy gesso on it and added some of the crackle paint to it. Then to deepen the black, I added the “Black Hole Black” Magical Powder to it, just using some water to activate the powder and added some of the “Pixie Dust” spray to it. To adhere it to the canvas board, I fully coated the back with some matte gel, placed it where I wanted it and weighed it down to make sure it dried flat. Fully coated the back of that cardboard doesn’t just make sure it is well attached, it seals it up so it won’t become soggy from the back side as I continue working.

Now it was time to start building up all of the mould pieces. I started with the bottom layer of gears, using my 3D Gel to adhere everything and to hold up the edges that extended over the edge of the cardboard so everything would be (relatively) even. I added my frame next and then set everything off to dry.

I hadn’t originally planned on the second layer of gears, but after I had my chain pieces and Mecha Steam Queen already dried in place, I realized it really needed another layer. Fortunately, some of my gears were made from air-dry clay (I often use what I have on hand or need to use up when I decide to get some pieces pre-made) so I was able to break them apart and get them to fit around the corner of the frame (top) and under the wings (bottom right).

Jul-22-MMKit-13 Jul-22-MMKit-19 Jul-22-MMKit-16

With everything finally in place, it came time to start adding the final layers of color, but before I did that, I added a layer of Krylon’s Workable Fixatif, just as a precaution for a little extra protection since it was about to get super wet and messy!

I started with some “Ink Black” Liquid Acrylic Paint and the “Black Hole Black” Lindy’s, and watered it all down, moved the canvas about to get it flowing, and dried as I went. So long as it was still wet, I could reactivate the Lindy’s (and paint) and continue moving it around.

For the wings on my Queen, I used the “Bavarian Blue” powder and some Liquid Color Fluid Medium to hold it in place once it dried.

Jul-22-MMKit-14 Jul-22-MMKit-07

Because I had to break my second gear up some, it left a few small gaps, so I decided to use it as an opportunity to add a bit more sparkle, and used the “Crushed Crystal’s” paste to fill in the gaps and added a touch to the ends of the wings.

To start bringing up the details of my Queen, I added some of the “Ink Black” paint and the “Black Hole Black” Lindy’s and watered it down so it would flow into all of the details.

To intensify the blue on my gears, wings, and Queen, I added some Liquitex “Phthalocyanine Blue” Acrylic Ink, watered it down a little to help it flow, added some of the blue mica powder from Finnabair’s “Pearls & Crystals” Mica set to add a little bit of variation to the shading, and dried it completely so it would stay put!

Jul-22-MMKit-02 Jul-22-MMKit-09 Jul-22-MMKit-12

With all of my blacks and blues in place, it came time to add the final details. To start I used some “Burnt Sienna” Liquid Acrylic Paint to create my shadow effects. It is an absolutely perfect color to create a vintage effect and fabulous shadows to really give a piece some depth. After all my mediums had dried, I came in and gave the whole piece a coating of the “Pixie Dust” Fixative from this month’s kit.

After the “Pixie Dust” had dried, it was time to add some various waxes to highlight various areas on the piece. After my waxes, the final step was adding my beads. I used some “Midnight Magic” Iridescent Beads from ReneaBouquets along the gears and frame, and some 13@arts “Brown Microspheres” to give the final shadowy detail to the layers of my Queen.

Jul-22-MMKit-15

Thank you for joining me here in my corner, I hope you enjoyed the building of my “Mecha Steam Queen” and it gave you some ideas of how you can use the various mediums from not only this month’s kit but previous Tres Jolie Kits as well! That’s what makes Tres Jolie Kits so fabulous – it allows you to build your stash!

Tres Jolie Kit Club-Paperclay & a Tag Booklet-Aug. 2021 Cards, Tags, & More Kit

Hey, all! Welcome back to my corner!

This week I’m bringing you a two part project using the August 2021 Cards, Tags, & More Kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club – part one: paperclay + moulds + paper; part two: tag booklet!

FRAMED-20210721_121034

As I was sitting and looking at the cut-apart sheet from the kit, I couldn’t help but wonder if I could make the wreaths more dimensional. Then it dawned on me – they looked like the would fit in the Stamperia Mould from the July 2021 Mixed Media Kit! Check out my video to see how I used the papers with some different moulds and how I put the quick tag booklet together!

Now for a few photos. First up, the paperclay pieces I created:

Tres Jolie Kit Club-December Mixed Media Kit-Bottle Brush Display

Hey, all! Welcome back to my corner!

Due to life, this will be my final project for the Tres Jolie Kit Club, but I’m sure you’ll find the incoming design team to be very inspirational. As my final project, I used the rest of the ornaments I made for the first project to make a bottle brush tree display.

20201130_092902-FRAMED

Since I already had the ornaments made up, this project went together rather quickly and easily! Check out my video to see the process:

Video:

20201130_093018-FRAMED

I used the last bit of clay I had to cover an up-cycled jar, attached the ornaments, gessoed and painted, added some of the PearlEX powders, and finished them off with some of the glitter. Easy peasy!

Tres Jolie Kit Club-December 2020 Mixed Media Kit-Ornaments

Hey, all! Welcome back to my corner!

This week I’m bringing you some ornament ideas to make using items found in this month’s Mixed Media Kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club and some resin from my stash.

20201122_090350-FRAMED

I did a few different color combinations for you, to give a good sampling of what can be done to fit your personal style and décor. Check out my video to see the process!

Now, how about a few close-ups?

20201122_090205-FRAMED 20201122_090215-FRAMED

I did a few different base colors. Some have black gesso under the red paint, some have white gesso under the silver or red paint, and some have the PearlEx powders mixed into the clear epoxy I used.

20201122_090435-FRAMED

After I had all my ornaments painted how I wanted, I added some of the PearlEx powders to them all.

20201122_090226-FRAMED 20201122_090427-FRAMED

After I used some acrylic spray to keep my powders in place, and I gave all my ornaments a coating of the glitter from the kit. I think these will beautifully reflect blinking Christmas lights!

Tres Jolie Kit Club-December Mixed Media Kit-Holiday Canvas

Hey, all! Welcome back to my corner!

My first project for December is this silver and gold Holiday Canvas I created using the items found in this month’s Mixed Media Kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club, with just a few staple items to go along and a cut file to use as a template for my poinsettias.

20201119_111636-FRAMED

This project was rather simple to go together! There was a bit of elbow grease used to roll out the clay for my poinsettias, but after I knew what direction I was headed it just came together! Check it all out in my video:

Video:

20201119_111717-FRAMED 20201119_111702-FRAMED

After I really smooshed the clay into the Prima Mould I let it start drying to make it easier to pull out of the mould. I also found that I could bend the mould some and let those pieces dry before taking them out. The mould flattens back out, while the ornaments stay curved! If my word-y description is clear as mud, I show my methods in my video!

20201119_111646-FRAMED 20201119_111738-FRAMED 20201119_111728-FRAMED

For my poinsettias, I used a cut file from the Silhouette store to make templates that I pressed into some rolled out clay and cut out with a craft knife, then hand-shaped and set aside to dry. The centers of the poinsettias are just some little balls of the clay I rolled with my fingers before letting them dry.

After my clay pieces were all in place I coated everything with the silver paint from the kit. Then things got really wet when I just started adding on the PearlEx powders! There was a lot of water, a lot of letting the powders flow how they wanted, and a lot of heat gun use! (And yes, in the video you see me using two heat guns to get the job done!)

Tres Jolie Kit Club-November 2020 Scrapbooking Kit -Color Board

Hey all! Welcome back to my corner!

Today I’m bringing you a purse-size calendar I created using the color inspiration (image below) and the papers and chipboard found in this month’s scrapbooking kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club.

20201112_132834-FRAMED

Compared to other books/journals I’ve made, this one came together rather quickly! It doesn’t have a thick spine, so I couldn’t get carried away adding extra pages. Check out the video below to see how I did it.

Video:

Isn’t this a beautiful color board? I love the look of purple and gold together! Keep scrolling down, there are some photos of the finished calendar below!!Color challenge

20201112_132846-FRAMED

I wanted to add a little something extra to the cover, but I also wanted it to hold up to use, so I opted for some Beautiful Board from ReneaBouquets and some stars I made using my “Stars & Moons” Mould, some tabletop epoxy, alcohol ink and Magical Shakers for color, and some mica flakes. Between you and me, those stars came out fabulously!

20201112_133106-FRAMED 20201112_133042-FRAMED

I couldn’t believe how lucky I was that I just happened to have a book cover in just the right shade of yellow-gold with the perfect title for a calendar! I don’t know what the book originally was, but I loved being able to repurpose the cover.

The next six photos are close-ups of the inside cover, pocket pages, and the calendar cover; you can also see those custom paper clips I made.

Thank you for joining us here at Tres Jolie, I hope you enjoyed this project and it gave you an idea of how you can interpret the color board and of what can be done with the papers found in this month’s scrapbooking kit!

Tres Jolie Kit Club-November Mixed Media Kit-Butterfly Panel

Hey, all! Welcome back to my corner!

This week I’m bringing you a grungy “Butterfly Panel” using the items from this month’s mixed media kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club!

DSC_0042-FRAMED

All of those Mould pieces, butterflies, and beads came from my stash, as well as the MDF I used as the base, but I used the Decorative Paper, stencil, and Distress Paints from the kit to give the base some texture and to give it all some color. Check out the video to see how it all came together.

Video:

Pretty straightforward, right? A lot of layers, a lot of different textures, and just working with the colors found in this month’s kit! Here are some close-up images for you to take a look at!

DSC_0046-FRAMED DSC_0057-FRAMED

I’d been hanging on to these butterflies for a couple of years just waiting for the right project and inspiration to come along, and this month it came to me! The MDF I used as my base is nice and sturdy, so it was able to take all the weight from all those Mould pieces and those two butterflies. (That large butterfly is really pretty hefty!)

DSC_0043-FRAMED

Here you can see how I have those pieces all layers working together. Make sure you have some heavy-duty adhesive to take all the moisture while you are working and the weight while you are done! I love using my super-heavy gel for projects like this, it is super-versatile. I can use it with stencils, I can mix paint into it, and I can use it as an adhesive.

DSC_0054-FRAMED DSC_0055-FRAMED

In the photo on the left, you can see a close up of some of the Mould pieces topped with those texture pebbles and the finishing touch, those iridescent beads to offset the matte finish of the paints and wax. The photo on the right shows more of all those textures and layers, but also give a good view of the background. You can see the decorative paper gave some wrinkles, and the stenciling gave some lines!

DSC_0047-FRAMED

This photo gives a good look at how “thick” this project is! Make sure you have someplace sturdy to display your masterpiece when you are done!

As always, thank you for joining us here at Tres Jolie. I hope you enjoyed this project and it gave you some ideas of what you can do with items found in this month’s mixed media kit!

Tres Jolie Kit Club-August 2020 Mixed Media Kit-Pen/Pencil/Paintbrush Holders

Hey, all! Welcome back to the my blog!

Today I’m bring you my third mixed media project of the month for the Tres Jolie Kit Club using items from this month’s Mixed Media kit. I decided to add a bit of decoration to my craft room by turning two cans into pen-pencil-paintbrush holders.

DSC_0109-FRAMED

My new paintbrush holders went together quickly and easily; most of the time I spent on these was dry time! Check out my video below to see how I did it all.

Video:

DSC_0112-FRAMED

DSC_0113-FRAMED

I, carefully, glued the mould pieces to my cans immediately after forming them (using some E6000) to make sure they were molded to the curve of the can.

DSC_0115-FRAMED DSC_0142-FRAMED

I grabbed up some crackle paint (from a previous Tres Jolie kit) and gave everything a nice coating. I didn’t add mould pieces all the way around my cans because, in my case, they are going to be against a wall, so I didn’t think it was necessary, but you can decorate your cans however works best for your style!

DSC_0118-FRAMED

I sprayed the three Distress Oxide Sprays on the cans, and after they were dry I used some Krylon Workable Fixatif before adding the Liquid Acrylic Paint and using the Lindy’s Magical Powder on the mould pieces.

As I mentioned in the video, I did a final seal on my cans using some Mod Podge Matte Acrylic Sealer, and I have since ran my cans under water and “scrubbed” them with my hands. I am happy to report that nothing came off!

I hope you enjoyed this project and it gave you an idea of what can be done with items from this month’s Mixed Media kit! Stay Crafty, friends!

I used the Prima Modeling Material with the Finnabair Mould to create the bust and flourishes, which I “painted” with the Lindy’s “Bayou Boogie Gold” Magical Powder, and after I prepared my paintbrush I used the Distress Oxide Sprays to add the background color. Check out my process video to see how everything came together!

I used some Prima/Finnabair Crackle Texture Paste on my background (from my stash) with a couple of stencils I have collected from previous Tres Jolie kits! After the paste had dried I used the three Distress Oxide Sprays from this month’s kit to give the background some color. Plus, I finished off two packs of flowers, both of which I had been hoarding from previous Tres Jolie kits.

I love the mould that came in the kit this month, and I especially love that it is an item I will be able to keep in my stash to use over and over again! Some items, like the glitter I sprinkled about from a previous Tres Jolie kit, will (eventually) run out, but that mould will be in my stash forever!

I hope you enjoyed this altered paintbrush and I hope it gave you some ideas of what can be done with items from this month’s Mixed Media kit! Stay crafty!
