Tres Jolie Kit Club–November Mood Board + Mixed Media Kit

Hey, y’all! This week I grabbed up the Tres Jolie Kit Club November 2022 Mixed Media Kit, the burlap flowers from the Scrapbooking Kit, and a couple items from my stash to create a fabulous fall décor piece!

The only mediums I used for color were the four Stencil Butters that came in the kit – it was all just a matter of how I mixed and layered them to create the different shading.

This project really was rather simple – I let the stencil butter and the texture powder do the heavy lifting for me!

I didn’t use any gesso on the surface because I didn’t want too many layers that may make it more difficult for me to see the laser-cut details on the Tres Jolie cornucopia base. The first thing I did was grab up some artist’s tape and tape off the border between the edge of the filling and the basket, then I brushed a thin coat of the Chocolate Stencil Butter all over the basket. To start getting some detail built up, I mixed some of the Chocolate Stencil Butter with some texture powder and used some small round brushes to create the raised areas of the basket – or the areas that I thought of as raised!

Since I had a little of that mix left, I brushed it onto the lower part of the base then used a baby wipe to clean it up – just leaving some of the color behind to start filling in the areas between all of the foliage and produce.

Once all of the Chocolate Stencil Butter had dried, I started working with the Fern in the same fashion. I mixed in some texture powder and started building up the apple and some of the foliage. Then, to create some variations in shading, I mixed in some of the Eggplant Stencil Butter for the pear, and to create the darkest of the green, I added some of the Terra Cotta and Chocolate. Then I just brushed the Fern Stencil Butter on straight from the jar to add the light areas to the apple and pear and some lighter highlights to the foliage.

I also wanted to add a little more light coloring to the basket, so I brushed on my leftover mix, sprayed it down with water, and wiped up most of what was there – leaving just enough to add a hint of color besides the Chocolate.

The raised areas of the pumpkin are made up of some of the texture powder mixed with the Terra Cotta, and after that had dried, I came back with some of the Terra Cotta straight from the jar and filled in the smaller areas and I used my finger to rub a thin, uneven layer on top of the texture powder mix.

Since I loved the unevenness of using my finger to rub on the Stencil Butter, I decided to add some of the Terra Cotta to the cornucopia basket and rubbed on some of the Chocolate along the edges.

For all of the grapes (berries?) I used a cheap cake piping bag and tip with the Eggplant Stencil Butter and just created all of my “dots”! I think it made the process much quicker than if I had tried to use a brush. I just sprayed the surface of the Stencil Butter with water and made a little puddle to dip my finger in so I could smooth out any areas – so long as either my finger or the surface of the Stencil Butter was kept wet, my finger didn’t get stuck!! To really get those grapes to pop, I grabbed up my heat gun, and (for once) I purposely “overheated” my texture paste/stencil butter to create bubbles!

For the grape stems, I just mixed some texture powder, Eggplant, and Fern together and brushed it on. Then I watered it down and added that green-ish hew to the inside of the basket, and then used up the rest to give my metal “Welcome” a coating. Once again, I didn’t use any gesso, I just brushed my Stencil Butter directly on the surface. After that layer had dried, I used a soft brush and added some of the Eggplant to the upper half (and back) of the metal word.

For my stand, I up-cycled two of the hanging bars from a hanging file folder, bending one around to create the bottom and cutting the second in half to create the two uprights behind the cornucopia. I used some Gorilla Clear Grip to hold the metal in place, then came back with some 3D Matte Gel for extra adhesion and to hold the “Welcome” in place. I mixed some of the Chocolate Stencil Butter with some of the texture powder and some of the 3D Matte Gel for adhesive power, then brushed a layer onto the metal bars. I grabbed my heat gun up so I could get the surface of the mix dry, then added my flowers with some 3D Matte Gel.

After all of my gel had dried, I came back and just added some touch-up areas to the stand and word, then gave a coating of the Chocolate to the back for a more finished appearance.

That was it! It wasn’t a super complicated project, just a matter of mixing colors and trying to keep as much detail as possible! Thank you for joining me here in my corner, I hope you enjoyed this project and it gave you some ideas of what you can do with your Mixed Media Kit this month!

Tres Jolie Kit Club–Steampunk Top Hat–September 2022 Mood Board + Scrapbooking Kit

Hey, y’all! Have you checked out the Tres Jolie Kit Club September Scrapbooking Kit yet? Seen this month’s mood board? Both are fabulous! The kit has the “Gilded Steampunk” Collection from 3 Quarter Designs – the perfect fit for the “Shabby Steampunk” mood board challenge!

Now, I love, L-O-V-E, Steampunk, and while I’m not a 100% Shabby Chic type of person, there are aspects I really love about that style too. This week, for my mood board inspired project, I have a Shabby-Steampunk Top Hat I created using a cut file I designed, the “Gilded Steampunk” Collection from the kit, a couple of moulds, and lots of mediums from my stash – quite a few that are from previous Tres Jolie Kits!

It wasn’t until I was editing the video that I realized this project isn’t all too “complicated.” The majority of the time spent working on it was really just “busy work” – i.e. rolling clay, gluing, painting, etc. Once I had my base together, and finally figured out where this hat was headed, it went together rather smoothly! Alright! Time to get talkin’ about this Shabby-Steampunk Top Hat!

The first thing to do was to put my base together. There aren’t too many pieces – I tried to keep it as simple as possible while creating the size I wanted while using my 12” x 12” cutting mat and cardstock. There really is only one way everything fits together, but I have included a photo for reference using the cut file.

After my cardstock base was together, I added some black gesso to all of the areas that I thought may or may not get covered by the patterned paper pieces – I did it mostly because I had used white cardstock, if I had used a darker cardstock or a coordinating cardstock, I don’t know if I would have added the gesso. However, it did also give a little extra stiffness to the base, so that was a bonus I hadn’t really thought of! And, even though it is no longer noticeable, I also added a layer of “Halo Pink Gold” Metallic Paint on top of the black gesso – just to be prepared in case any of those areas didn’t get covered in the later stages.

I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do for the inside of the hat, I just knew I didn’t want to just give it a coat of paint. Finally, I decided to see if I could do a paint pour – on some tissue paper – to create a liner! It was messy, but it worked! And I was able to use that paint pour on the inside, sides. For the inside top, I just mixed up a little more to pour and dumped it right in.

I wanted to get as many pieces ready for assembly as possible before sitting down to start the process, so I used some leather-effect polymer clay to create the “leather” underside of the brim and I used some metallic and glitter polymer clay in a couple of embossing folders to create the sheets of “metal” to fill between the leather-clay and to use along the outer edge of the brim.

The final set of pre-assembly pieces I made were the patterned paper panels and the pink band for the hat. For the pink band, I just cut the half-sheet from the paper pack in half and connected the ends to make one long strip.

For the top, side, and brim patterned paper panels, I partly eyeballed, partly measured approximately where the cut would be – especially for the pieces that have the mannequins, hot air balloon, etc. – and cut them all out. Much like the base pieces, there are not a lot of ways for the pieces to fit all together, but I will add a reference photo here for the panel locations on the base.

As I sat staring at all my pieces, trying to decide how to use those chipboard and cut-apart pipes, I thought of windows; little steampunk windows to see the “inner workings” of the hat. I grabbed up some circle dies, picked a few places around the brim and on top of the hat, and cut the circles out of the patterned paper.

I used a couple of stencils with a couple TCW Stencil butters to add some dimension and texture to the circles I cut out, coated the chipboard pipes in copper embossing powders, and added some Beads In A Bottle to create a little dimension and bolts/rivets to the chipboard. Then I started the assembly process while I waited for my resin to set up in my gilding flake coated, polymer clay window frames.

After all my pipes were in place I gave them a coating of clear gesso so I’d be able to add my paints to create the illusion of depth with shadows.

Now it was finally time to add my patterned paper panels! I also added the pink band, and I created the inside band using the half-sheet of paper from the pack that looks like leather. I finished adding all my clay pieces to the underside of the rim and added them to the outer edge of the brim.

So now I had all of the pieces of the hat together – except the windows – and started my work on filling any gaps and smoothing it all out. I used a mix of gold Stencil Butter, gold Beads In A Bottle, and 3D Matte Gel to smooth along the edge of the brim with all the layers, and to fill in any spaces that I thought needed it. To prepare for the addition of the windows, I added a ring of Beads In A Bottle around the circles on the hat brim and top.

While my hat sat off to let that gold mix dry, I got to work on putting the focal point of the hat together. I grabbed up some mould pieces and used 3D Matte Gel to hold them in place, and after adding my gesso, I started adding the first layers of paint. While the gears and heart were setting up, I put my pipe pieces together and added the first layers of paint to them. I added the heart and gears to the pipes using more 3D Matte Gel, and set it off to let it set up while I added my lace bits and gilding flakes to my hat base. Before I got too much further along, I added a coat of Workable Fixatif so when the time came to add my final paints there would be a layer of protection on the patterned paper that would keep the wet from just soaking right in.

I laid my hat on its side, using whatever I had on hand to hold it in place and prop it up so the side I wanted to add the heart and pipes to was, at least mostly, level. I made sure to do this close to bedtime, so the 3D Matte Gel I used to hold the resin pieces in place had time to set up – without me becoming impatient and checking it too soon! I also started adding some art stones to the areas I could get at with the hat on its side.

Now it was finally time to add on the windows in preparation for the final layers of paint, art stones, and waxes.

I added more paint to my resin pieces, being careful when I was near my windows so they wouldn’t get splatter on them, and then just started working my way down from the top of the hat with more art stones and my paints. I let all the paint dry before flipping my hat over and adding some paint to the underside of the brim.

The final touches on this Shabby-Steampunk Top Hat were the addition of a few Finnabair waxes to the top, sides, art stones, lace, and the top and underside of the brim.

Tres Jolie Kit Club–Recipe Lapbook–July 2022 Mood Board + Scrapbooking Kit

Hey, y’all!

Ever have one of those projects that was filled with “technical difficulties” all the way through? That was me with this lapbook! My word of advice, if your sewing machine stops working at the beginning of a project, take it as a sign to stop and do a different project! I didn’t heed the warning sign, and while I waited for a replacement sewing machine I kept trying to work – but nothing went right after that! I went from being ahead of schedule with my July projects, to being barely able to finish on time; so a project that I didn’t think would take too long, took way too long!

It’s here though, I finally finished, and I have completed a Recipe Lapbook using this month’s Scrapbooking Kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club for the July 2022 Mood Board.

I tried to explain my process the best I could in my video; it did become rather difficult to work in an orderly fashion when I had to do what I could while waiting for my sewing machine. Hopefully the video makes some sense, or at least enough sense to give you some idea of what I’m attempting! It’s a rather long video – almost an hour, so you might want to watch it in sections! I couldn’t figure out a good place to split it apart and have it appear continuous since I was already fighting confusion!

The mood board this month has some deep, beautiful, summery colors to it, and the papers in this month’s kit are the perfect compliment. And, of course, lemons = lemonade on a hot summer day, and an entire recipe lapbook to go with! Place your entries in the July 2022 challenge folder on Tres Jolie Kit Club Café Facebook page. You saw the front cover of my lapbook at the beginning of this post, but I also wanted to show the other three sides of it. After more work than I had hoped, I was able to get the honeycomb chipboard from this month’s Mixed Media Kit to give some nice texture along the spine. If you haven’t seen the video yet, this spine is actually the second spine I made – because the first one wasn’t working; I just couldn’t get the honeycomb to show up. I finally got it to show by using some (metal) nuts that fit inside the chipboard and my iron to get the iron-on adhesive to melt together.

I originally planned on making a single flap for the closure, but the yellow stripe ended up being off center, and that would have drove me nuts! However, I actually like the final closure better, because I like the yellow being horizontal against the vertical of the lemon fabric and the “panels” of the closure area. I didn’t actually tack the fabric down, I used lots of glue, clipped the tacks down to where they would just enter the book cover, and added some 3D Matte Gel to help keep them in place.

The main flap on the left side of the lapbook is an accordion folder made from a hanging file folder. I don’t have all of the specific measurements, because I made my folds where the score lines already were on the hanging folder, cut it to the height of my inside cover paper, and just eyeballed how wide I wanted it based on how it would look. However, I do know the sides were cut three inches wide and scored every 1/2-inch for the accordion folds.

On the back of my accordion folder I have a couple of book covers added in as flaps. The larger one is covered in some sari silk, and the smaller one has [what I think] is the last piece of that particular print. I have magnet closures for the smaller book covers, but I didn’t add any closure of the main, accordion folder, flip. Under the accordion folder, I have a double-pocket folder and three mini file folders I created just for this project using sheets of the Simple Stories paper from the kit.

On the front of the larger cover with the sari silk, I added a hinged belly band. I have some 3/4-inch magnetic tape, and I laid a strip down on the cover and on the band. At the top of the band I added a couple of stronger magnets to make sure it would stay shut even with a few recipe cards in place. On the other side of the same cover, I added some homemade glassine (using a tracing paper + semi-gloss spray technique I learned from Nik the Booksmith!) to one of the frames, propped it up on some macramé cord, and turned it into a pocket. The magnetic closure for this flips under to close, and flips out of the way so the pocket is accessible.

In the spine of the book cover I added a [new and unused!] headband so I could put a removable booklet in. It is a soft cover booklet – I layered the paper with some interface backed fabric – then I popped on the chipboard frame from the kit that I had embossed with a few different powders. After my frame was in place, I filled in the open areas with some Glossy Accents and/or Diamond Glaze, alcohol ink, and to really deepen the black on the bees, I used the “Black Hole Black” Lindy’s Magical Powder from this month’s Mixed Media Kit.

I have two folders, filled with more folders/pockets in the booklet – one for main dishes and one for side dishes.

I wanted to add in some charts, so I printed out a couple of different ones on tracing paper using a ledger paper I created as the background, then added my semi-gloss spray to create my “glassine.” I turned the 3-slot chipboard frame into a pocket with some vintage photos to give the “family history” feel.

The right side of the lapbook features a large, fold-out panel with a little box folder on it. The box folder also folds out – it is held in place with some magnets & magnetic tape – to reveal a couple of folder pockets and a little coin pocket I made.

When you flip open the large panel, you will find a little strap holding another book cover in place that has another chart on the front, and a couple of pockets on the back. I added another headband to the hinge of this cover, and created another little removable folder to slide into this space.

This folder is a simple one, with just three pockets inside it and a pocket on the back to hold another piece of “glassine” with some helpful hints on it.

On the back of that big flap I made, I have a couple of pockets for breakfast and lunch recipes, and some ephemera to add some decoration.

It’s a new month, and that means it’s time for new kits from Tres Jolie Kit Club! Get yours before they’re gone! We are starting to implement our new year changes, so make sure you are following us on all Social Media platforms and are a part of the Facebook Café that way you won’t miss a single announcement or project created with these kits.

The June 2022 Scrapbooking Kit is filled with gorgeous new papers from P13. As always, these papers will be amazing for all your upcoming projects – they have a beautiful spring/summer feel to them, and a “craft” theme. You will find a lovely assortment of patterned papers and perfectly coordinated embellishments in this month’s Scrapbooking Kit.

The Mixed Media Kit has what you need to get messy and have fun! Did you get to see the newest releases from The Crafter’s Workshop? This kit has some of them! Grab up your palette knife (or an old store card) and start spreading your beautiful, summery Stencil Butters through the stencil onto one – or all – of the Mixed Media Boards in this month’s kit!

Hey, y’all! Welcome back to the Corner Scraps Blog!

This week I am focusing on the Mixed Media Kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club, and while I do make a few sample projects, my focus is really going to be on what a gel plate can do! I find gel printing to be incredibly addictive – I can sit for hours without noticing time passing while I peel paper after paper off.

I do manage to add some mood board inspiration as well. I love citrus, not so much eating or drinking (I don’t care for sour), but for reasons I can’t explain, I love how citrus fruits LOOK – so I made a cut file that finds its way onto the gel plate! Papers:

Here are a couple images of some of my finished papers – of course by “finished” I mean from this session! I may or may not decide to add more in the future! You can see my Citrus Cut File (mostly) survived being used over and over again, and I now have some gel plate printed citrus slices!

Easter Eggs:

I just happened to come across a package of four wooden Easter Eggs in Wal-Mart, and decided they would be fun to use with the gel plate! If you saw my December 2021 Mixed Media Kit Project “Sleigh Bells,” then you already know I like to use more than paper on my gel plates! So I did it again, this time with some Easter Eggs.

The egg on the left is just multiple layers from gel printing, tipped off with some splatters from the Dina Wakley Gloss Sprays found in this month’s kit. The Egg on the right also has multiple layers, but I also used the Citrus Cut File on the gel plate and then came in and added some gel pen after it was all dry to really make the slices stand out!

For the “Spring” Egg, I used a flower-filled egg stencil I’ve had for years (no idea where it came from) and my Dina Wakley Spray to give some fun flowers to my gel printed background, then just grabbed a gel pen to add “Spring.” For the egg on the right, after my background layers were dry, I grabbed a white oil pastel to draw on some flowers! Oil pastels make a great resist, so I just added my Dina Wakley Gloss Sprays to color the stems and petals.

Envelopes:

Once your gel prints are dry, you can fold them up and create custom envelopes with your original papers! Well I used a sheet of regular printer paper for my examples, if I had started with envelopes in mind, I would have used some cardstock for my envelope prints, but I don’t always know where I’m headed when I do most projects, and this week was no exception!

I added a bit of the Citrus Cut File and I made some paper Easter Eggs to layer up. Fun to make, and I have some one-of-a-kind envelopes. I also want to add that after they are dry, the Glossy Sprays make great resists!

Backgrounds for my tag and ATC:

For the tag, I started tearing up some of my papers and layered them up, and added some Citrus slices using some Liquitex Matte Medium. After the matte medium was dry, I went back with my gel pens to add some accents to the rinds and scribbled on some flowers. I then came back with my glossy sprays and filled in the citrus slices. I can’t say this tag is “done”, but I wanted to do a little something that showed a few examples for layering and color. For my ATC, I grabbed up my Prima ATC blanks, some bits of the paper I had made, and glued them in place before taking it over to my sewing machine and adding some random “scribble” stitches. Then I came back and popped on a few chipboard pieces from my stash to complete the card.
