Tres Jolie Kit Club – Shabby (Vintage?) Fall – October 2022 Mood Board + Scrapbooking Kit

Hey, y’all! I just love the papers in this month’s Scrapbooking Kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club! The mix of white with a touch of light grey is perfect for building or expanding on.

Now I know, if you’ve seen the mood board you may be wondering how I came to a pink and grey mixed media panel from a mood board filled with autumn colors and décor with a “Vintage Fall” twist (Shabby is a form of “vintage,” right? I’m not the only one that thinks that, am I?). Well, I’ll tell you – it all started with the sweater pillow – and I do have some leaves on here!

I will admit, I love the mix of white and grey – I adore Farm Chic décor – but I don’t usually lean towards pinks. In fact, there are probably people who know me that are very confused right now seeing this pink! However, contrary to popular belief, I don’t hate pink, I just won’t wear it (unless it’s socks!) or decorate with it. (Fun fact: I will put pink in “strange” areas – my phone cases, Kindle cover, wallet, etc.)

This month’s mood board is filled with beautiful autumn colors and fabulous textures to inspire your project! Mood boards aren’t really meant to be “copied” – they are, as the name suggests, designed to invoke a mood in you. How do they make you feel? What parts catch your eye?

As I mentioned, I saw that cable knit pillow and then just ran with it! I just thought something like that would be a fabulous background. Truthfully, I didn’t even notice that the mood board had some pink flowers on it until after I had finished my panel!

For my panel, the first thing I did was get the paper I had picked out collaged down to the canvas using some Liquitex Matte Medium – although any collage medium would work such as Mod Podge, Distress Collage, etc. I didn’t trim my paper until after I had it glued down and it had a chance to dry. It is a little less stressful if I am not worrying about every edge being perfectly lined up!

After the matte medium dried and I cut down the edges, I started the stenciling process. I used my “Victorian Tiles” stencil first, with a mix of regular (Ranger Opaque Matte) texture paste, then came back through and added some areas of Distress Crackle Paste. I also grabbed up a leaf stencil and added it to a few areas between and on top of the previous stenciling. Then, and this might be the most important part for me, I let it all dry overnight! It is possible to use a heat gun on texture paste, even crackle paste, but allowing anything “crackle” to dry naturally has always given me the best results. Drying too quickly just doesn’t allow the crackle to crack as much. Then, the next morning, I came in with the leaf stencil again, lined it up on the previous stenciling, and added some extra crackle paste and some “Kitsch Flamingo” Embossing Glaze – then set the panel off to dry and crackle before coming in and melting the glaze.

To finish off preparing the base, I added the two skinnier ScrapBerry column pieces and little “bricks” along the top – cutting one of the columns in half (I used a pair of wire cutters, and with a little squeeze it snapped right apart!). I didn’t want my canvas perfectly symmetrical, so I used one of the halves and one of the bricks on the left, the other half, the whole piece, and the second brick on the right. Then, after the glue had set, I coated the entire background in clear gesso and set it off to dry while I started work on the flowers.

For my flowers, I started by gathering up some white roses and leaves from my stash and dismantling the pink flowers from the kit – separating the green parts from the pink. Then the prep work began!

I started by coating all my white flowers and leaves, along with the two long leafy pieces from the 49 & Market flower pack, with some white gesso. Then I grabbed up a sheet of the paper from the kit to cut out some extra leaves from one section, and I fussy cut a few of the larger pink flowers from the other side of the sheet (it is the second, matching sheet from the pack that I used for the background).

Now things were really about to get messy!

I coated all of the die-cut leaves in Distress Translucent Grit Paste – working carefully with the now wet paper – to crumple, uncrumple, and shape the leaves while placing them on my background where I planned on building up all the flower clusters. I also took this opportunity to add the Translucent paste to the fussy-cut flowers so I could shape them, add a layer of protection, and get them in place.

For all of my green pieces from the flower packs and the white roses and leaves from my stash, I made a mixture of white gesso and opaque matte texture paste to coat them in, placing the long leaf pieces from the 49 & Market pack on my background and setting the rest off to dry.

My next step was to get some extra color on all of my flowers and foliage!

For the fussy-cut flowers on the background, I used a combination of Tattered Rose Distress Oxide and my Kitsch Flamingo and Cocktail Party Distress Crayons – just using a water brush to add a bit of color and definition to the fussy-cut pieces.

Then, to add a bit more depth to the pink flowers from the kit, I made a “puddle” of the Kitsch Flamingo and Cocktail Party Distress Crayons mixed together and brushed them onto the inner edges of the petals. To get the color to feather out a bit, I just gave the flowers a light spray of water and let them air dry.

For the six smaller 49 & Market flowers that I pulled off their stems, I put them in a little palette and let them soak in some Cocktail Party Distress Mica Spray.

To get all of my other pieces various shades of gray, I started coating them in a mix of Grave and Crypt Distress Grit Pastes with some Pumice Stone Distress Oxide Spray thrown in!

After they were all coated with that mixture, I decided they needed more gray – the Pumice Stone has a tan-ish tone – so I sprayed them with a combination of Hickory Smoke and Weathered Wood Spray Stains and Oxides.

Even though a lot of my water-reactive mediums are mixed with texture pastes, the colors on the flowers were not! So I took this opportunity to give everything a coat of Workable Fixatif so I could continue working without worrying about my colors moving.

Now I had to add some color to the 49 & Market leaves I had already attached to the canvas. For those, all I did is make a mix of Hickory Smoke and Weathered Wood Distress Crayons on my mat watered them down and used my water brush to brush the colors on.

After a spray of Workable Fixatif on the canvas, I started the process of getting all of my flowers and foliage in place using some 3D Matte Gel.

While the 3D Matte Gel started drying, I worked on all of my mould pieces. After coating everything in white gesso and letting that dry, I started adding all of the other mediums.

For my large, pink keyhole frame, I started with a base of Tattered Rose Distress Paint, Translucent Grit Paste, and Finnabair Texture Powder for a little extra texture to make up for the watering down of the paste. While that mix dried, I started work on all of my gray pieces, using a mix of Grave and Crypt Distress Grit Pastes, and Finnabair’s Cool Gray Rust Effect Paste. After all those pastes were dry, I coated them in a light layer of Hickory Smoke Distress Paint, gave them a light mist of water, and dabbed off areas of the paint to allow areas of the texture pastes to show through and add some variation of color.

While the paint was drying on the gray pieces, I went back to the pink piece and gave it a light, inconsistent coating of Kitsch Flamingo Distress Paint, some spots of Cocktail Party Distress Mica Spray, and some water. After all of that was dry, I came back with Kitsch Flamingo and Cocktail Party Distress Crayons, adding them directly to the mould piece, and watered them down so the colors could flow where they wanted as they air dried.

To finish up all of the gray mould pieces, I added some Hickory Smoke Distress Spray Stain, mixed it up with some Graphite Texture Paste, spread it around some, then sprayed them all with both Hickory Smoke and Weathered Wood Distress Oxide Sprays before that paste has a chance to dry.

Now it was finally time to get everything on the panel and finish it up!

After all of my mould pieces were in place, I added some areas of DecoArt White Crackle Paint, tucked in some pink sisal, added more crackle paint, got my Ingvild Bolme birds in place, and added a little crackle paint to them.

After the 3D Matte Gel had a chance to set up overnight, I mixed some Payne’s Gray watercolor paint with some water and Liquid Color Fluid Medium and used a pipette to get that mix under all of the flowers and mould pieces. For any areas I wanted to make a little grayer, I mixed the Payne’s Gray with some of the fluid medium and brushed it on, watering it down some if I needed to.

For all of the “shadow” making, it was just a process of adding the mediums, adding water if I needed to, and tilting and turning the panel until I had the colors where I wanted them – drying a little at a time to start getting the color set as I went.

For the cabochon [mould] pieces, I used a mix of white gesso and Tattered Rose Distress Paint as my base coat then added some Kitsch Flamingo Distress Paint before adding them to the canvas. Once on the canvas, I added a thin layer of crackle paint to them, blending it onto the canvas around them.

On top of all the crackle paint I added, I started to give some extra color and definition to all of my pieces using Distress Crayons – Kitsch Flamingo and Cocktail Party on the pink areas, and Hickory Smoke and Weathered Wood on the gray pieces and birds.

To add a little extra sparkle to the flowers, I brushed on some Finnabair Pixie Effect Paste – it has the pink flakes in it to go with the canvas, but it also has some light teal-ish flakes for a bit of contrast.

After everything was dry, it gave me a chance to stand back and take a look to see if there were any areas I wanted to add a bit more Payne’s Gray to.

The last step was to add the final touches with some Finnabair Waxes, and I was finally done!

Tres Jolie Kit Club–Grungy Journal-August 2022 Mood Board & Scrapbooking Kit

Hey, y’all! After much toil and trouble, I finally got this grungy journal put together! You see, mentally I have an order of operation for my projects – my first project of the month for Tres Jolie Kit Club focuses on the Cards, Tags, & More Kit, and my second project is for the mood board – this month ran a little different though because <gestures at everything>!

Anywho…I finally finished my mood board project! I’m GenX and that means I lived through Nirvana and weird metal jewelry and all things flannel, so I couldn’t help but get excited about the papers this month – Grunge Reinvented by 3 Quarter Designs.

The general construction of this journal is like most junk journals, so my video focuses on how I put the cover together, a bit about the open spine, and some highlights on what is in the signatures.

Isn’t the mood board fabulous? Rust, film, watches – so much grungy and/or steampunk inspiration here! Make sure to join in this month and share your creation in the August Mood Board Folder by the end of the month.

My cover consists of corrugated cardboard, chicken wire, chipboard, cardstock, decorative paper, and tons of mediums. I shaped my corrugated cardboard, dyed my white Artisan (linen blend) cardstock, added some Finnabair decorative paper to it, glued everything together, poked the ends of my chicken wire through so they wouldn’t stick out, and added layer upon layer of paints, stains, powders, and pastes to the cover until I got a color combination I was happy with.

I added some resin stars made with my Finnabair “Stars and Moons” mould, and coated them with some of the “Statue” Foundry Wax. I added multiple layers of embossing powder to the cardstock phrase and used the “Statue” Foundry Wax to create a “frame” around it. Then I used the “Sterling” Foundry Wax to create splatters on the cover and the phrase.

When I started this Grungy Journal, I didn’t know exactly how an open spine would work, and I wanted to make sure the herringbone binding had something sturdy to hang on to, so I used the metal hangers that I had removed from the hanging folders to wrap the binding around, then I used some JB Weld epoxy to really make sure it was a sturdy and solid attachment to the chipboard cover pieces.

I used a variety of alcohol inks and mixatives to stain my herringbone binding to grunge it up and found this “Exposed Tape Binding” open spine tutorial by Molly Brooks inspirational and very easy to follow along with (this was my first open spine!). However, because my signatures weren’t going to be evenly stacked – as seen in Molly’s tutorial – I added a single stitch through the herringbone binding to keep my signatures in place.

I used some sari silk to create my tie closure – sewing it as a tube, knoting one end and leaving a few inches unsewn so I could lay it flat between the chipboard and mixed media cover I created. While I did make sure there was a lot tucked in and glued down, as I kept working on my journal, I decided I wanted to reinforce the edges where the strain would be.

For the reinforcement, I folded the sari silk back on itself and added some E6000 and bookbinding tape.

Then I punch two holes through, making sure to go through the layers of sari silk, added some Chicago [style] screws (they look like the posts from traditional post-bound scrapbooks), and a couple of washers – with some more E6000 – to make sure I had a tight fit and some Loctite for the threads.

With all the different junk journal tutorials available for construction, I am just going to highlight what can be found within my Grungy Journal. I have the standard variety of papers and envelopes, and I made clusters to use as decorations and/or tuck-in spots. For the button images from the cut-apart sheet, I used my awl to poke the thread holes out, then added some of the bookbinding thread I had cut off after I tied my signatures in place – and topped it with some Glossy Accents to create a faux enameled/epoxy surface. In fact, I added Glossy Accents to a lot of the cut-apart pieces to give them that faux surface, which really gives a sense of depth to the images!

For the chipboard filmstrips from the Grunge Reinvented collection, I layered up four different embossing powders. First I used some Lawn Fawn “Fake Tan” ink, added some Rocky Road & Ancient Amber Baked Textures, and while it was still hot and sticky I added more Rocky Road, melted that, added some Chunky Rust Baked Texture, and then finally some Rusty Hinge Embossing Glaze – always on top of the still hot previous layers.

For my clusters, tuck-ins, and pockets, I used a combination of glue, my tiny attacher, and stitching to put them together and attach them. When I did use the tiny attacher, I made sure the underside of the staples would be covered, that way they wouldn’t come out (as easily!) and there wouldn’t be any rough edges.

I used a combination of papers from the scrapbooking kit, papers from my stash, and even pieces from the hanging folders that had been cut off when I was cutting them down to size.

I have a variety of textures throughout the journal – using paper doilies, vintage crocheted squares, stitching, and a variety of fibers and trims.

In addition to my tuck-in spots and pockets, I added in some envelopes and belly bands. I even have some pieces of grungy handmade paper in a few spots!

To make sure there was ample writing space, my middle signature is filled with papers that have no decorations, pockets, or tuck-in spots. I just stitched two pieces of sari silk together (they have light interfacing on them to give them a little stability) and ran the whole stack through my sewing machine before adding the holes for the bookbinding thread to attach it to the open spine.

Tres Jolie Kit Club–Cottage Life Décor–July 2022 Cards, Tags, & More Kit

Hey, y’all! If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere of this rotating blue marble, I hope you’re staying cool! If you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, just know I’m jealous! I am just counting down the days until I can see highs under 100°F (38°C). I am fortunate enough to have some AC though, which I know not everyone has.

This week I have a “Cottage Life” Décor piece I made using this month’s Cards, Tags, & More Kit, and a deep frame that has existed since sometime in the 80s (the company is no longer in business, that I’m aware of), and some mediums from my stash.

Now, y’all know I love using every part of the kits – packaging, scraps, etc. – and this project was no different! I loved the shapes of the Graphic 45 Chipboard pieces, and thought they would make some fantastic vintage frames – and they did! I, very carefully, cut along the outside of the negative space where the chipboard piece had been, eyeballing my distance, and to strengthen my new frames, and start them on their patinaed copper journey, I used some “Patina Bronzed Copper” embossing powder on them. After they were embossed, I backed them with different pieces of patterned paper.

After my “Cottage Life” Folio (July 7th post), I had quite a few strips of paper, so I got them evened up and made a collage of them on a 5inx7in canvas board to use as the background for my frame.

Aren’t those Tres Jolie Chipboard gnomes adorable? I had to add them to my “garden,” so I did the same to them that I had done to my frames – I embossed them to give them a bit more strength and stability – and to make them copper so they could start their patina journey.

For my frame, I didn’t want it completely rough, but I didn’t want it completely smooth either, so I randomly added some Finnabair “White Sand” texture paste before giving it a coat with some white gesso, “Steampunk Copper” paint, and a touch of “Brass” Patina Effect Paste.

To raise up all of my frame and gnome layers, I used hot glue because it is sturdy, and there is only a cooling time, not a long dry time – plus, when it’s hot it’s “stretchy,” which means I was able to make a pile of it, then use both hands to adjust the frames exactly how I wanted them. I was careful to keep the hot glue away from the embossed areas though because I didn’t want it to reactivate!

You can see I left no surface bare! Since this is an open-front, deep frame, I wanted to make sure I had the inside of the frame matching the outside. After the canvas was together and the paint was dry on the frame I started adding my waxes – some “Rich Copper,” some “Patina Green.”

When it came time to add the frame to the canvas, I used hot glue at the corners to get it in place and to hold the canvas even with the back of the frame so I could turn it over and fill in around the edges with some 3D Gel.

After the 3D Gel had dried, I turned my frame back over and popped on the final, front chipboard piece using more 3D Gel.

Tres Jolie Kit Club–Memory Dex Cards!–June 2022 Cards, Tags, & More Kit

Hey, y’all!

We’re halfway through June, and this week I have some Memory Dex cards for you that I created using items from this month’s Cards, Tags, & More Kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club and items from my stash – quite a few from previous Tres Jolie Kits! Check out my video to see what I did for each of the cards I made – then grab up your supplies and create your own Memory Dex card(s).

I had bought the Heidi Swapp Memory Dex Spinner quite some time ago, and had originally thought of grabbing up some spray paint and changing the color – I might still do that – but I grabbed it up for this project so I’d have someplace to put my cards when they were done, and to make sure I didn’t make them too tall to clear the bottom! Depending on what kind of “–dex” system you have – be it a spinner, a box, something vintage, or something custom made – you can get very creative on how your Memory Dex cards are made! If, for example, you have the Memory Dex Box, you don’t have to worry about height, only width! (After this project was completed I happened to find a vintage Rolodex® system that would allow cards to fit in without any height or width restrictions!! *happy dance*)

A closer look at the cards I made:

My Concord & 9th “Lucky” Die cuts the three layers – thick line and outline from one die, thin line from another – so I made two lucky cards. The thick line and outline were cut from a half sheet of the white cardstock that I hand-inked up using a variety of Distress Oxides from my stash. The white pieces were from another partial sheet of the KaiserCraft cardstock, and on some of those, like the butterfly, I added some Distress Oxide to give a pop of color. I didn’t have any particular plans when I set out to make my cards, I just cut a lot of pieces and started layering; generally ending with a few of the Eyelet Outlet jewels and/or some of the small Prima butterflies.

I made my “Imagine” card a shaker card by cutting a circle out of the pink striped paper from this month’s kit, adding a sheet of craft foam with a circle cut out as a spacer, and filling it with some of the beads and sequins from the Buttons Galore cube from Septembers (2021) Cards Kit. I just used some plastic from an old package of die cuts – I often save the harder/stiffer plastic packaging for just this reason! – and stitched it in place with some metallic silver thread. My “Imagine” as a layer of the “Gamboge” Stencil Butter on it from the Mixed Media Kit and, while it was still wet, I sprinkled some Lindy’s Magical Powder on and spritzed it with a little water.

These two cards were really a couple of “let’s see how these parts work together” cards! The “grateful” card has a slot cut from the top (the label die from Tim Holtz’s “Stitched Slots”) that I just tucked a couple of large die cuts into after giving them a little color. The flower is just inked with some Distress Oxide, and the leaves have some Lindy’s Magical’s sprinkled on them. I cut the card from my inked KaiserCraft sheet, backed it with some of my leftover handmade paper, and added some stamping, jewels, & butterflies. The “grateful” had originally been stamped, but it didn’t show up very well, so I traced over it with a gel pen.

I wasn’t sure when I cut it if I would use the Bird Branch die, but I added some Magical’s, let it dry, and thought about what I’d do with it while working on other cards. Eventually, it came time to play with it, and I found that I liked how it looked with the oval frame, but the frame needed some color too! So on went some Magical and PearlEx powders. The card is another cut from my inked sheet and has some of the “Grecian Gold” Modeling paste (from the Mixed Media Kit this month!) dabbed on with my finger for a little shine. Then, to add a bit from this month’s Card’s Kit, I popped on a tab punched from one of the papers, added some orange jewels, and a Tim Holtz “Small Talk” sticker from my stash.

These two Memory Dex cards were made from a piece of scrap cardstock that I practiced a couple of mixed media ideas on. I have some texture paste, mica powder, and Magical powder on the base tag/Memory Dex, then I stamped the butterfly from the stamp in this month’s kit, I cut a tag-shaped frame out from my inked paper, layered a couple of more tags vertically, popped in a flower, added my jewels and phrase.

While I was doing all of my cutting, I decided to make a round Memory Dex card, so I used one of my circle dies to cut out the inked stenciling I had done (stencil from this month’s Mixed Media kit!). I stamped on the butterfly and phrase, attached a rectangle bottom, and ran it through my sewing machine a few times. The final touches were some Distress Oxide around the edges and the jewels.

When I first started this card I had thought of just attaching the pocket to another card, but as I was putting it together, I decided that I much preferred the pocket as the card! The top slot is backed by some pink cardstock from my stash, and the rest of the slots are back with white cardstock – what had been the original Memory Dex shaped card. The Tim Holtz “Stitched Slots” die is the perfect size for the spinner, I just punched the slots at the bottom and popped it right on. I used some of the smaller tags, cut with the tag dies from this month’s kit and cut from this month’s papers, to stick on some “Small Talk” phrases and slipped them into the slots. They don’t weigh a lot, so the friction between the papers is enough to hold them in place when they are upside down on the spinner. I then just added some of my die-cut hearts, outlined them with a yellow gel pen, added the label, and another “Small Talk” sticker.

The card with the bicycle stamped on it was probably the fastest to put together because all I did is layer up the different circles I had already cut out! I used the pink striped circle to fill the circle in the card base, then put the layers through my Sizzix using the dot embossing folder that had come with the machine, added that half-circle with some Lindy’s Magical’s stenciled on, and then all of the other plain circles. To add some contrast to all those circles, I popped on one of the smallest tags, then stamped on the bicycle and added the butterfly and phrase.

My “Spring” card was my first of the batch! I trimmed an inch off the width of a 3”x5” index card so it would fit on the spinner, used the stamp from this month to just get the flowers to peek out from behind the tag, and splattered it with some “Lemon” Glossy Spray. The tag is from some pink cardstock I had that was already adhered to an adhesive sheet. I used the thin scraps from my Folio at the beginning of the month, and just randomly layered them on the adhesive. I then cut the tag using the next to largest die in the set, peeled the protective paper the rest of the way off, and brushed on some Finnabair Mica Powder. Then I just finished up the details with some flowers, jewels, a butterfly, and the small tag.

Lastly, my “document” card. The die-cut word was too long to fit on the Memory Dex Spinner, so I cut it where it could be hyphenated, clipped off an end of the cross-mark on the “t” to use as the hyphen, and layered up a couple tags and a tab on the base card. I used some of the “Grecian Gold” Modeling paste on “document,” the stars and diamonds are from my Concord & 9th Lucky Die Set, there’s a little stamping, and a few jewels, and this card was done!

Tres Jolie Kit Club–June 2022 Mood Board-“Let Your Creativity Bloom” Junk Journal

Hey, y’all!

This week I turned the June Scrapbooking Kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club into a junk journal. The P13 papers and ephemera from their “Let Your Creativity Bloom” line had such beautiful colors – muted shades of pink and sage – and there was a photo of a book in this month’s mood board! What else would I think up for the challenge?!?!

I didn’t just put any old fabrics and papers together, I decided that to be extra messy, I needed to dye my fabrics exactly how I wanted and make my own (matching) paper – check out my video to see the process, or, if you want, you can just check out the flip-through.

On my cover, I layered up strips of fabric, so of the ones I dyed, some are scraps from my stash. I topped a part of one of the patterned papers with one of the Tres Jolie Chipboard pieces coated with some embossing powders, added a few of the flowers, and added some Distress Foundry Wax in “Sterling” as some accent color. The twist for this month is SPRING FLING.

This junk journal is thick! There are over 50 pages filled with lots of writing space, tuck-ins, and pockets – and a securely attached tie closure to keep it together.

On both the front and back covers I added a section of lace trim, lightly colored with Distress Oxides, as tuck in spots.

I turned envelopes into pockets, covered them with strips of fabric, and added closures to a couple of them – a zipper on one and a simple tie on another.

I have tuck-in spots throughout the journal made up of layers of papers and ephemera. I have even added in some old book pages from a 1935 History of English Literature book – I thought this book fit well with the overall “Creativity” theme.

I wanted to add a lot of texture and visual interest in this journal, so I have short pages, ledger papers, bits of fabric and lace, and tons of stitching in here. There is something to see and feel everywhere!

I turned this bit of patterned paper into a simple flip-up card using some lace as the hinge and adding a tab to the edge.

a sheet of patterned paper torn makes a wonderfully distressed pocket! And I just couldn’t bring myself to (fully) separate this stretch of flowers, I used the last bits of that particular lace to make hinges between four inch sections so it could be pulled out – and the image could stay together.

Old music sheets add a lovely aged touch while also making fabulous pockets. I even used the envelopes from the ephemera and tickets to create little tuck-in areas.

When I saw all that leftover dyed water from my fabrics, I couldn’t just let it go to waste, so I added scraps of paper and created my own custom-colored, dapple-edged sheets – either glued to decorated envelopes and pages, or straight into tuck spots to be written on (I suggest using markers, paint pens, or gel pens though, due to the uneven nature of handmade paper!)

I didn’t want to just simply cover my basic white envelopes, so I added fabric, lace, paper, and/or ephemera to create variety and interest. I used one of the Prima flower packs from the kit, and in addition to my cover decoration, I stitched flowers directly onto some of the tuck-ins.

As promised in the video, here is the “stitching guide” (I don’t know what else to call it!) for how I put my signatures in.

Tres Jolie Kit Club–May 2022 Mood Board!–Mixed Media & Scrapbooking Kit

Hey, y’all!

Whew! I didn’t think I’d get this project done in time – it wasn’t the project that was difficult, it was my oldest requiring my computer skills because his laptop stopped computer-ing and that took up a lot of my time. Anyhow, I made it, I’m here, and I have used this month’s Mixed Media Kit and Scrapbooking Kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club to create my May mood board inspired project. Tim Holtz + Finnabair + Stamperia + vintage + clocks + flowers – who could ask for more?!?!

Taking photos of a glass surface isn’t the easiest task, but don’t worry, I have photos of the inside before I put it in the clock! this project was actually a rather quick project, and I probably could have finished it in one day if I hadn’t had to stop for a few days! Check out my video to see what I did to create this distressed assemblage clock!

Easy, right? And using the clear wax gives a nice, satin sheen to the body while adding a protective layer! As you can see in the video, the majority of this project was done using the kits from this month. The wax and a couple of other items were from my stash and I grabbed a couple items from March’s Mixed Media Kit – but the bulk of it came from May kit items!

After I decided what bit of the Stamperia paper I wanted as my background, I glued it to the back with some 3D Matte Gel. The gel works great on metal, it adds some moisture protection, and it filled in the grooves behind the paper. After I was sure the gel was dry, I sprayed the surface with some Workable Fixatif, let that dry (about 5 minutes is all it takes!), and mixed some mica powder with the Liquid Color Fluid Medium found in March’s Mixed Media Kit to create a paint for the flower printed on the paper. (Clear gesso would work to protect the paper for painting too but make sure it is dry! And don’t forget, using a heat gun will not only make your metal hot, but it can cause bubbles in your gel, gesso, and paint!)

With my background done (and the outside finished), I started building up my focal point. From the scrapbooking kit, I used some fussy cut flowers from the paper pack and some of the chipboard flowers. I distressed the edges, and to give them depth, I used my hot glue gun to start building everything up. I grabbed the small Finnabair clock face, and gave it a wax, color medium, and mica coating; used mica and color medium on my flower edges, as some shadow effect, and a little on the pink flowers at the center. For the final adhesion, I used my 3D gel to hold my cluster in place.

I knew from the beginning I wanted to do something to the outside, so after some brainstorming I decided to grab my DecoArt Black Gesso – since it isn’t a heavy gesso – add a thin layer, then mix it up with some Liquitex Matte Gel, micas, fluid medium – just about anything I could grab up – and make up a base coat. After that base was dry-ish (Liquitex Matte Medium, like ModPodge, dries “sticky,” which I wanted), I brushed on the dark purple mica and gave it a spray of Workable Fixatif. It just wasn’t quite right yet though, so I started rubbing some of the pink-ish mica on. Then I decided I wanted to see how the blue mica would look – and it was great! Do you know how metal looks when it’s been heated? The blue made me think of that, but I couldn’t figure out what to use to hold the mica in place. I didn’t want to “activate” the mica like a water-based product would do, and I suddenly remembered I had a tube of clear Antiquing Wax! It was perfect! I was able to spread my mica around in a thin layer to get the look I wanted. After the blue layer had set up, I came back in with the ivory-ish mica and added it on. Note! Wax will reactivate wax!! But for this, it worked out, because the blue + ivory-ish = a green-ish hue!

When my wax was all set up, I came in with some sandpaper and added some distressing to the case.

I coated my outside flowers with some Krylon Matte Finish, then arranged them on the top and used more 3D Gel to hold them in place. When the photos were taken, none of my 3D gel was dry, so after that has time to get 100% dry I might go back and arrange the flowers a little more.

I did add some micas and color medium to the inside of the clock, but I don’t have a photo of that by itself (I forgot to take one, and I didn’t want to try and pull everything back apart)! However, you can see it in the video!
