Mixed Media Place-June 2020 Challenge-Green Dragon

Hey, all! Welcome back to my corner!

Today I’m bringing you an altered hoop I made for the June 2020 Challenge over at Mixed Media Place. I didn’t use a traditional embroidery hoop for this project, I just happened to have, what I believe was, an old Tri-Chem® hoop. It conveniently came with a metal insert, so I had a nice sturdy surface to work on!

My original idea for this project looked nothing like what came about; I hadn’t even considered a dragon originally! I had originally planned to go with a nature theme, but when I was looking through my chipboard to see what types of leaves I might have, I came across the dragon, thought, “Hey! Dragons can be green…,” and from there I just went with it. Check out my process video below the Mixed Media Place Challenge Board to see how it all went together.

The chipboard dragon from Creative Embellishments was what started my inspiration for my project.

I used two Prima/Finnabair paints on the dragon, Opal Magic “Green-Gold” and Sparks “Fairy Wings.”

It wasn’t a full pack of flowers, but I hadn’t used very many of the 49 & Market “Emerald Isle” previously; this project finished my pack off.

I love all of Finnabair’s Rust Effect Pastes in their original colors, but this project called for a little sparkle to be added to them, so I watered down the Opal Magic paint and let it separate and pool at will.

I used a mix of Brea Reese Texture Pebbles and some (very) micro glass beads at final accents.

Here you can see just how VERY micro those yellow glass microbeads are.

The stencil I used on the background is one I made quite a while ago in Silhouette Studio and cut with my Cameo 3 (which wasn’t easy on stencil material!) The iridescent beads are “Citrus Breeze” from ReneaBouquets.

Sometimes, just sometimes, I feel the need to do a project that has no real purpose. That’s where art journaling comes in. In this case I wanted to use/remember this quote by Former First Lady Michelle Obama from her book Becoming:

Now I think it’s one of the most useless questions an adult can ask a child—What do you want to be when you grow up? As if growing up is finite. As if at some point you become something and that’s the end.

I think it is probably a good thing art journaling doesn’t have to have a purpose, because this looks nothing like what I was hoping for. But it did let me just experiment, which can be helpful when suffering from a mental road block. Basically, I was going for something shinier and dreamier, but I’m okay with the end result.

My only inspiration, besides the quote, came from this months Creative Embellishments Color Challenge. It helps that my favorite color is blue! I even managed to get the twist in (clouds or waves) when I stenciled on some clouds!

I can’t guarantee a video. I recorded as I went, but my computer was acting up. In the end it actually decided it wanted to restart while in the process of recording. The last step is actually not recorded because it involved texture paste & paint and I couldn’t wait for my computer to stop being temperamental.

I, more or less, know what is recorded, the problem is my computer cooperating during editing.

While I see how the video is willing to come along, here are some photos!

    Dragonfly Express

    This project actually had two sources of inspiration. The first was the ReneaBouquets June 2019 Mood Board Challenge, the second inspiration was the Creative Embellishments June 2019 Challenge. (Both sources of inspiration are below) I actually saw the Creative Embellishment challenge first, and I have a thing for hot air balloons. A looking at them from the ground thing, not an actually getting into one thing.
    Anyhow, I also really wanted to use this dragonfly I had been working on, and a hot air balloon doesn’t need any help flying, so it (slowly) transformed into a flying ship! Besides the flying in the Creative Embellishment inspiration, I also love the whimsy of the image, and the Ferris wheels made me think of actual wheels!

    The following photos were taken in a more shaded area, because my front porch had a convenient hook I could use to get some greenery in the background and not have to hold the project in one hand while shooting with the other! LOL!!

    And here are some photo of the dragonfly while it was still grounded! [Note: I found the dragonfly in my yard, buried in the dirt by a tree, apparently left by the previous owners. It was shortly after finding it that I came across a Finnabair DT members (I think) post in Instagram who used Finnabair’s Leaves to build butterfly wings (I think it was a butterfly) and a solution to my broken wing dragonfly was born!]

        I love water lily’s, I think they are so beautiful floating out on a pond, so I was, of course, immediately drawn to, and inspired by, the water lily in the Mixed Media Place’s May Mood Board! 
        I just couldn’t help myself! I have a pond on my property, but I have yet to get the water lily’s I want for it, so I decided to make one! (I think the husband worries they will interfere with fishing too much!)

        Altered Notebook – June ReneaBouquets Facebook Swap



        The notebook is a 9″x6″ notebook I found at Wal-Mart.

        I’ve owned the Prima Wildflowers Pillar for a few years now, and have been waiting to use that big, orange hibiscus on just the right project! Apparently the “right project” does eventually come along! LOL

        ReneaBouquets always seems to have just the right pieces for so many of my projects.

        This flamingo is made with Amazing Cast Resin & a Wilton, silicon, candy mold!

        Some more “waiting for the perfect project” items I had been hoarding. Studio Calico was the first crafting supply subscription I used! I love them, and in a perfect world I’d be a subscriber to ALL clubs I could find, but since I don’t have Jeff Bezos’ money, I try different clubs, one at a time!

        Art Daily Journal Cover

        For the months of May and June, Tres Jolie Kit Club is going to be working on the Finnabair Art Daily Journal! Which is why the May Cards, Tags, & More kit contained the 58 Piece Journal Cover Set, plus Finnnabair’s Victorian Bookmarks & Sentiment’s Stickers!
        I decided to at least make the cover look like I planned on being productive!! I mean, it is the last day of the month and I didn’t actually get any of the “Daily” part done like I told myself I would “just as soon as I finished the cover.”
        Lots of mixed media products on here, and not all of the glue is dried or the Heavy Body Gel, but it was dry enough to take photos!

        First I took all the elastics off the journal so I could coat it in black gesso, then I figured out what was going to be the decoration after browsing my stash…so after I glued all the base pieces down I gessoed (<—is that even a word?!?!) again!
        I was going to just paint the cover with DWM’s Olive, but I saw my dylusion’s Chopped Pesto and decided to combine the two! They aren’t mixed together, I just dipped half my brush in one color and the other half in the second color. As I layered and built up the paint I would alternate colors or use both together again.
        After the paint dried I started working on my rust effect paste, starting with Brown and finishing with Rusty.
        As for the metal flowers; I gave them a coating of gesso and let it dry, then I spritzed them with water, randomly sprinkled the Perfect Pearls & Magical Shaker’s on them, spritzed them with water again, then heat dried. To help keep the coating in place I gave them a spray with acrylic sealer. (All this was done on my work surface, before attaching them to the cover!!)
        To finish I placed all the flowers to my liking, and gave a light coating of Metallique Wax to the edges of the cover!
        OH! The Tim Holtz Adornment on the spine (that I used to cover the original hole since I relocated the closure!) … it was gessoed, painted with Metallique Fresh Orange Acrylic Paint, then coated with the Firebird Wax!
