Tres Jolie Kit Club – Mecha Steam Queen – July 2022 Mixed Media Kit

Hey, y’all! Have you checked out the July Mixed Media Kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club yet? It has some fabulous Finnabair Tissue Paper, heavy black gesso, and Pixie Dust, along with some Lindy’s Magical’s, DecoArt Crackle Paint, Tres Jolie Chipboard, and a canvas board to get you started!

I was fortunate enough to receive the newest Finnabair Moulds in the mail the same day I was starting my project, so I have that fantastic Mecha Moth on here, along with a ton of other Finnabair mould pieces from both old and new designs!

I used a couple of stencils from previous kits with the crackle paint from the kit and some Finnabair “Crushed Crystals” Jewel Effect Paste. Then I loaded up and layered up all my colors using some of the Liquid Acrylic Paints from February’s Mixed Media Kit and the Lindy’s from this month’s kit.

Check my video out to see what I did to put this Mecha Steam Queen together!

To get my background started, I layered it up with some of the “Bavarian Blue” Lindy’s Magical’s from the kit and (part of) one sheet of the Finnabair tissue paper, using my Liquitex Matte Medium to adhere the paper. After I had my initial layer, I tore the remainder of the sheet of tissue paper into strips and layered them up, only adding the Magical Shaker as the initial bottom layer under all the tissue paper.

After my matte medium was fully dried, I came in with my stencils. I used my “Flourish” stencil with the crackle paint from this month’s kit, and my “Screwed” stencil with some “Crushed Crystal’s” Jewel Effect Paste. I just used my finger to dab on and blend a thin layer of the crackle paint along the edges and in the corners of the canvas and to soften the edges of the stenciling some.

After my “Flourish” stenciling was dry, I added a layer of clear gesso to help protect my crackle paint (it was going to be a wet, messy job!) and to make my subsequent layers of mediums easier to flow and roll around along the top of the stenciling and between the cracks. Because of the nature of the Jewel Effect Paste – when it dries it is more like the matte medium – I didn’t need to add any gesso to it.

With all of my background mediums dry, I come in with the “Bavarian Blue” Lindy’s, sprinkle it on, and really water it down so it will flow between all of the cracks. From here on out, I don’t let my mediums air dry on my background, I use my heat guns to make sure everything stays where I put it!

Jul-22-MMKit-03 Jul-22-MMKit-10 Jul-22-MMKit-17

On all of my various mould pieces, I coated them with black gesso – either the heavy gesso from the kit or my “regular” gesso on the more detailed pieces. If you only have the heavy gesso and want to get it into detailed areas a little easier, you can just mix in a little water to thin it some. After my gesso layers dried, I coated everything in some TCW “Sterling Silver” Modeling Paste. It says “Sterling Silver,” but it is more like sterling silver that has begun to tarnish – and I love it!

I used my 3D Matte Gel to hold my Mecha Steam Queen together before adding her gesso and modeling paste. I can say, all I knew was I really wanted to use the new Mecha Moth, and everything was built around that. I keep a bunch of pre-made mould pieces handy, so I grabbed them up and started playing around when suddenly I saw how fantastic my “Queens of Steam” piece looked on that big moth body! I added another layer of wings from the “Nocturnal Insects” Mould, and gave her a “Clockfaces” crown.

While I let that 3D Matte Gel set up, I went to work on deciding which gears I wanted to use and picked one of the “Baroque Frames” to set behind my Mecha Steam Queen. On my gears, after the modeling paste was dry, I added some “Texture Powder” to rough them up a bit, added some extra color to them using the two Lindy’s Magical’s from the kit, and I added some “Ink Black” Liquid Acrylic Paint. On my mould pieces, I allowed the mediums to air dry to allow everything to mix and flow together naturally. On the frame, I just mixed some of the “Bavarian Blue” Lindy’s with some Liquid Color Fluid Medium to keep it from being able to reactivate after it was dry.

Jul-22-MMKit-18 Jul-22-MMKit-11

To build up my background, I started with some corrugated cardboard (I just happened to find “hidden” behind a pile of other *stuff* – it must have fallen down some time ago and I forgot to fetch it then!). Anyhow, I used the heavy gesso on it and added some of the crackle paint to it. Then to deepen the black, I added the “Black Hole Black” Magical Powder to it, just using some water to activate the powder and added some of the “Pixie Dust” spray to it. To adhere it to the canvas board, I fully coated the back with some matte gel, placed it where I wanted it and weighed it down to make sure it dried flat. Fully coated the back of that cardboard doesn’t just make sure it is well attached, it seals it up so it won’t become soggy from the back side as I continue working.

Now it was time to start building up all of the mould pieces. I started with the bottom layer of gears, using my 3D Gel to adhere everything and to hold up the edges that extended over the edge of the cardboard so everything would be (relatively) even. I added my frame next and then set everything off to dry.

I hadn’t originally planned on the second layer of gears, but after I had my chain pieces and Mecha Steam Queen already dried in place, I realized it really needed another layer. Fortunately, some of my gears were made from air-dry clay (I often use what I have on hand or need to use up when I decide to get some pieces pre-made) so I was able to break them apart and get them to fit around the corner of the frame (top) and under the wings (bottom right).

Jul-22-MMKit-13 Jul-22-MMKit-19 Jul-22-MMKit-16

With everything finally in place, it came time to start adding the final layers of color, but before I did that, I added a layer of Krylon’s Workable Fixatif, just as a precaution for a little extra protection since it was about to get super wet and messy!

I started with some “Ink Black” Liquid Acrylic Paint and the “Black Hole Black” Lindy’s, and watered it all down, moved the canvas about to get it flowing, and dried as I went. So long as it was still wet, I could reactivate the Lindy’s (and paint) and continue moving it around.

For the wings on my Queen, I used the “Bavarian Blue” powder and some Liquid Color Fluid Medium to hold it in place once it dried.

Jul-22-MMKit-14 Jul-22-MMKit-07

Because I had to break my second gear up some, it left a few small gaps, so I decided to use it as an opportunity to add a bit more sparkle, and used the “Crushed Crystal’s” paste to fill in the gaps and added a touch to the ends of the wings.

To start bringing up the details of my Queen, I added some of the “Ink Black” paint and the “Black Hole Black” Lindy’s and watered it down so it would flow into all of the details.

To intensify the blue on my gears, wings, and Queen, I added some Liquitex “Phthalocyanine Blue” Acrylic Ink, watered it down a little to help it flow, added some of the blue mica powder from Finnabair’s “Pearls & Crystals” Mica set to add a little bit of variation to the shading, and dried it completely so it would stay put!

Jul-22-MMKit-02 Jul-22-MMKit-09 Jul-22-MMKit-12

With all of my blacks and blues in place, it came time to add the final details. To start I used some “Burnt Sienna” Liquid Acrylic Paint to create my shadow effects. It is an absolutely perfect color to create a vintage effect and fabulous shadows to really give a piece some depth. After all my mediums had dried, I came in and gave the whole piece a coating of the “Pixie Dust” Fixative from this month’s kit.

After the “Pixie Dust” had dried, it was time to add some various waxes to highlight various areas on the piece. After my waxes, the final step was adding my beads. I used some “Midnight Magic” Iridescent Beads from ReneaBouquets along the gears and frame, and some 13@arts “Brown Microspheres” to give the final shadowy detail to the layers of my Queen.

Thank you for joining me here in my corner, I hope you enjoyed the building of my “Mecha Steam Queen” and it gave you some ideas of how you can use the various mediums from not only this month’s kit but previous Tres Jolie Kits as well! That’s what makes Tres Jolie Kits so fabulous – it allows you to build your stash!

Tres Jolie Kit Club – Décor “Vintage” Spools -March 2022 Cards, Tags, & More Kit

Hey, y’all! Welcome back to the Corner Scraps blog!

This week I have some décor spools I made to go with this month’s “Threads” Stamperia papers and ephemera in the Cards, Tags, & More Kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club. I loved this month’s kit, and couldn’t help turn it into some décor pieces this week (and next week too!) along with the needlebook I made for my first project this month! I definitely focused on the “and More” part of the kit for March!

Check out the video to get some ideas and inspiration for what you can do with the items in this months kit!

Mar22-CTM-Spools-02

Video:

I can honestly say that if everything was insta-dry this project would not have taken very long! I spent a lot of time waiting for my 3D Gel or the paint, mica, and water soaked flowers to dry since I didn’t want to use my heat gun too much – some things just work best air dried, like the rust effect powder.

Mar22-CTM-Spools-03 Mar22-CTM-Spools-05

Here is are a couple of close ups of the shortest spool – the one with the Tres Jolie Chipboard Tailor’s Dummy (Mannequin) on top. As you can see, I added tons of mediums to the spools before I considered them finished, but I didn’t actually use that much! I used the lightest and darkest [rose] mica powers and the Liquid Color Fluid Medium from the March Mixed Media Kit, some Burnt Sienna Liquid Acrylic paint from the February Mixed Media Kit, and some rust effect powder from the September 2019 Mixed Media Kit. Mixing the darkest mica with the Burnt Sienna paint also gave me some rust color! All of the waxes I used were also from previous Tres Jolie Kits! (Tres Jolie Kits are great for building up a stash!)

Mar22-CTM-Spools-06 Mar22-CTM-Spools-07

Here is the base of the shortest spool. I just wrapped my “measuring tape” around the bottom, built up a hill of gel, and after it dried I added some rust effect powder and paint to make it look like it had been sitting around for ages! Letting my rust and paint air dry also allowed for some color to soak into the papers—adding more the the aged look I was going for.

Mar22-CTM-Spools-10 Mar22-CTM-Spools-11

I think the top of the middle sized spool was the quickest to go together – minus the dry time for the 3D gel to dry that is holding the chipboard up—because it is mostly flowers! You can see along the edges of the chipboard some of the dark rose mica that I painted on in some of the areas.

Mar22-CTM-Spools-08 Mar22-CTM-Spools-09 Mar22-CTM-Spools-12
Mar22-CTM-Spools-13 Mar22-CTM-Spools-15 Mar22-CTM-Spools-14

There are a lot of layers wrapped around this base! I have chipboard thread spools, scissors, and advertisements. This is the spool I used [reversed] Scotch tape on to hold the chipboard pieces in a curved shape while I waited for the 3D gel to dry. Then I came in with my flowers, followed by my mediums, and started layering on some color and rust.

Mar22-CTM-Spools-16 Mar22-CTM-Spools-18

Last, but not least, the tallest spool top! This one might be my favorite because it was large enough to really let the “rust” show up!! I also really love how the Burnt Sienna mixed with the dark rose mica gave a rust-ish color to the top edge of the sewing machine—it shows up especially well on the backside where the measuring tape paper is.

Mar22-CTM-Spools-17

Here is a good close up of how some paint and rust really added a distressed, vintage feel to those flowers. Once it’s in place, and if you don’t touch it too much while wet, paper is an amazing substrate to work with! It may be delicate when wet, but it makes up for it in absorbability and malleability.

Mar22-CTM-Spools-20 Mar22-CTM-Spools-21 Mar22-CTM-Spools-22

Here is the base of my third and largest spool. I added my rust, paint, and mica to all of my exposed edges, and really added some rust to the top of my chipboard bobbin. As soon as I’m sure all of the glues and chipboard is bone dry, I will be giving these spools a protective coating of some matte sealer and be posting them up in my Etsy shop.

Mar22-CTM-Spools-23

I even added some of the rust effect powder to the undersides of the tops! I carefully supported my spools between a few bottles and let them sit upside down until the rust effect powder and vinegar had dried.

Thank you for joining me here in my corner, I hope you enjoyed this project and it gave you some ideas of what you can do using the papers and embellishments found in this month’s Cards, Tags, & More Kit!

Tres Jolie Kit Club–“Carmen” Junk Journal–February 2022 Mood board

Hey, all! Welcome back to the Corner Scraps Blog!

This week I have my Tres Jolie Kit Club mood board inspired project for you – a junk journal using this month’s Scrapbooking Kit! I had an old book cover that I had altered a while ago, just waiting for the right papers to come along to make a junk journal, and the “Carmen” line from 13@rts (13 Arts) was the perfect fit! I really love the combination of the dark pink with the deep green that is in these papers.

Feb2022-Mdbrd-CarmenJJ-15

I didn’t make a “How to make a Junk Journal” video for this project—there are tons of how-to videos to be found on YouTube already—I just go over what I’m doing to help give you some ideas of how this month’s kit can be used. Check out my video to see my thought process!

Feb2022-Mdbrd-CarmenJJ-11

I mixed up four different embossing powders (check the product list at the end of the post!) and added that mixture to the Tres Jolie Chipboard from the kit. I then added it as little tuck spots on the back cover and front page of the journal.

Feb2022-Mdbrd-CarmenJJ-12

Feb2022-Mdbrd-CarmenJJ-13

The spine of this cover was in pretty sad shape when I originally decided to do the alterations. I had to layer up some linen hinging tape and book binding tape to hold everything together again, and the outer layer still wanted to peel off – by the fabric and canvas layers I added to my junk journal gave this cover new life.

Feb2022-Mdbrd-CarmenJJ-10

In addition to the “Carmen” papers, I have some printables I created and some tea dyed papers I made in here. That music fabric in the above photo has one of the printables printed on it!

Feb2022-Mdbrd-CarmenJJ-02

Feb2022-Mdbrd-CarmenJJ-03

Feb2022-Mdbrd-CarmenJJ-08

Some of the pages in my journal are dyed with various pink inks/sprays. I have stitching throughout, along with little tuck spots made from corners or layers of paper and fabric/lace. If I wasn’t using bits of the ephemera pack in stitched clusters, I layered them up on a page to add some interest and detail.

Feb2022-Mdbrd-CarmenJJ-04

Feb2022-Mdbrd-CarmenJJ-09

In addition to the ephemera pack for bits of detail, I used the cut apart page from the “Carmen” paper pad. After I cut out the piece I used, I distressed the edges with scissors and added some “Frayed Burlap” Distress Ink. I think one of my favorite things about junk journals is the freedom they give to the creative process. A lot of the time I would just grab up some of the bits and pieces and just start layering them up – without trying to think if it looked “right.” More often than not, NOT overthinking created easy and wonderful results!

Feb2022-Mdbrd-CarmenJJ-05

Feb2022-Mdbrd-CarmenJJ-06

Feb2022-Mdbrd-CarmenJJ-07

Although I love the creative process of creating junk journals, they are journals! So I also make sure to leave lots of room for journaling – blank pages, tags, and lots of tucks and folds to hold loose bits.

Tres Jolie Kit Club–October 2021 Moodboard–Texture ATCs!

Hey, all! Welcome back to my corner! I’m here today with my project for this month’s Tres Jolie Kit Club moodboard challenge—some ATCs that were inspired by all the yummy textures found on the moodboard! I used items from the October Cards, Tags, & More Kit, Mixed Media Kit, and lots of goodies from previous kits!

FRAMED-20211012_113258

I have some weaving on a couple of the ATCs, some lines inspired by the lines in the sand, and some sisal inspired by the wool! Check out my video to see how I put everything together and keep scrolling down to check out the moodboard, photos of each ATC, and a product list!

Now for some close-ups to show all those textures!

FRAMED-20211012_094319

I didn’t have any plan going into this project, I just knew I wanted to really get some textures on my ATCs! The background of this ATC was created using some “White Sand” Finnabair Texture Paste and a texture tool by Making Memories that I’ve had for Y-E-A-R-S!!

FRAMED-20211012_094336

Here is one of the ATCS that has some weaving for the background and some sisal (in place of wool)! I just used my Lindy’s spray to turn the natural sisal into pink sisal!

FRAMED-20211012_094423

On all the ATCs I added some machine and hand stitching, used a black Stabilo to give some depth to the different layers, and added a Tres Jolie Chipboard button from the Cards, Tags, & More Kit—topped with Finnabair Metallic Flakes—for some shine.

FRAMED-20211012_094355

ATCs don’t have to remain vertical, and I liked a horizontal orientation for this ATC better! This was the ATC I completed in the video, so it had more dry time, which really makes it look like those Art Stones are just sitting on the card!

FRAMED-20211012_094440

I really love this palmistry hand from the Tim Holtz ephemera pack here! The sisal on this ATC was sprayed with the green Lindy’s before being tucked in, and, like all the others I have my stitching, Stabilo, art stones, and button added on.

FRAMED-20211012_094246

Thank you for joining me here in my corner! I hope you enjoyed these ATCs and they gave you some ideas how to use this month’s moodboard and what you can make using items found in the Cards, Tags, & More and Mixed Media Kits.

Tres Jolie Kit Club-July 2021 Moodboard: “Be Happy” Mixed Media Canvas

Hey, all! Welcome back to my corner!

Today I’m bringing you my moodboard inspired project; a mixed media canvas using items from both the July Mixed Media Kit and the July Scrapbooking Kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club! Pink flowers, gold veining, and butterflies were my inspiration from the moodboard, so I gathered my supplies and just went with it!

FRAMED-20210708_113200

I love moulds, so I was super excited when I saw that the Mixed Media Kit came with a fabulous Stamperia frames mould! Be sure to check out my video to see how I used the mould and how my canvas came together! (Note: Although I found it unnecessary with the Amazing Cast Resin, you can use various household products to help release the frames from the mold, such as baby powder, corn starch, cooking spray, and mica powder. Personally, I think the cooking spray is best for resins, and powders [would be] best for clays – because the resins absorb powders.)

FRAMED-20210708_113218

I used the Dina Wakley paints from the Mixed Media kit on my background, baseboard doll, chipboard butterfly, and frame—along with lots of water in some areas to make the paints more translucent! I added just a touch of Vintage Gold wax to the frame details and wing edges.

FRAMED-20210708_113250

FRAMED-20210708_113354

FRAMED-20210708_113436

I brushed some gel medium along the edges of the flowers to hold the gold microbeads in place, adding just a bit of detail and texture to the flowers! Then I dug into my stash and grabbed all three of my art stone bottles (mega, regular, & mini) and started adding them on. I like to sprinkle my art stones in place before adding the Diamond Glaze—that way I can get my placement down before making it permanent.

FRAMED-20210708_113423

FRAMED-20210708_113407

As my final touch, I used a metallic gold pen from my stash to add some gold “veining” along the edges of my torn paper and to circle the epoxy dots from the kit.

I hope you enjoyed this project and it gave you some ideas of what can be done with items from this month’s Mixed Media and/or Scrapbooking Kits!

Tres Jolie Kit Club–April 2020 Mixed Media Kit–Spring Flower Pots

Hey, all! Welcome back to my blog!

Today I have some spring flower pots I decorated for the Tres Jolie Kit Club using items from this month’s mixed media kit and multiple partial packs of flowers from my stash!

DSC_0033_FRAMED

Below is the video of what I did! This project was rather quick and simple, and in no time I had a lovely trio of flower pots to help bring in spring!

Video:

DSC_0029_FRAMED DSC_0032_FRAMED

To coat my flower pots I mixed some texture paste with the gesso and texture powder from the kit. After that dried, I spritzed the pots with water, sprinkled some of the “Alpine Ice Rose” Magical Shakers on, and spritzed some water on again. When that dried, I sprayed the flower pots with ModPodge Acrylic Sealer to keep the Magical Shaker in place.

Even though the bling from the kit is self-adhesive, I added some extra FabriTac before wrapping the tops of the pots, just to be safe!

I filled the flower pots with some floral moss from Dollar Tree, and was able to finish off three partial packs of flowers and a package of leaves!

I hope this gave you some ideas of what can be done with this month’s kit! I spent $2 (+tax!) at the Dollar Tree for the 3-pack of pots and the bag of moss (and I still have lots of moss left!!), added items from this months kit, and cleared out some of my hoarded flowers to create this little spring décor piece!

Tres Jolie Kit Club–March Mixed Media Kit–Birdhouse

Hey, all! Welcome back to my blog! Today I’ll be sharing a Spring Birdhouse I created for the Tres Jolie Kit Club using items from this month’s mixed media kit along with items from my stash!

DSC_0001_FRAMED

I created the birdhouse with various brown and tan cardstock sheets and some patterned papers from Friends and Craft O’Clock using Silhouette Store ID# 271046 – “Birdhouse 3D Gable Box” by Snapdragon Snippets (Snapdragon Snippets Assembly Instructions)

I used the larger circle from this month’s kit on the “entrance” of the birdhouse, then used the last of the transparency and flowers from my stash to fill it in! The stick is one from my yard, the brick chipboard is from the kit, and painted with a single layer of the Cafe Au Lait paint. I added some of the metal butterflies to finish things off!

This photo of the roof shows the watered-down paints that I used to add some extra color to the birdhouse!

Here at the back of the birdhouse, I arranged some of the chipboard to cover the rear hole from the stick!

More bricks and butterflies on the front!

I painted the back of the transparency pieces with the Olive Green paint before using gel medium to hold it in place!

In addition to items from the kit (*From previous Tres Jolie kits), I also used:

Scotch Advanced Tape Glider; BEST Double-Sided Tape 1/4” & 1/8”; Art Glitter Glue; FabriTac; Spellbinder Tool n One; Silhouette Store ID# 271046 – “Birdhouse 3D Gable Box” by Snapdragon Snippets (Snapdragon Snippets Assembly Instructions); *Friends & Craft O’Clock “Vintage Bison”; *Bazzill “Dark Kraft” Cardstock (x4); Silhouette Cameo 3; Niacapa Cutting Mat; Silhouette Premium Blade; Stick from outside; Krylon Workable Fixatif; Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher.

Note: All other cardstock was unmarked & I’ve had it so long I can no longer recall manufacturer or how I acquired it! I used 2 sheets of the dark brown and 2 sheets of the light tan. (At least I’m fairly certain, it may have been 3 sheets of the dark brown.)

Tres Jolie Kit Club–March Mixed Media Kit-Paddle

Hey, Everyone! Welcome back to my blog!

For my first project this month for the Tres Jolie Kit Club, I am sharing with you what I made using the unfinished paddle from this months kit!
DSC_0017_FRAMED

As you can see, I also used the mediums, transparency, butterflies, and one of the frames from the kit to put my board together.
Check out how I did it with this video!

I mixed some of the 13@rts Olive Green paint with the 13@rts Gel Medium, both from the kit, and stenciled the mixture on in a few spots.

The sketched leaves are from the Silhouette store, but you don’t need this specific file to recreate the look! You could hand-draw your own design, use stamps, or fussy cut a nice patterned paper!

DSC_0025_FRAMED

I used a thick layer of the Gel Medium on the frame so it would hold the frame and the stems down. For the leaves that didn’t get caught under the frame, I went back and used some Art Glitter Glue to attach them. I also used little dabs of the Gel Medium to hold on the butterflies!

I absolutely love how my paddle came out! And it wasn’t overly complicated! I spent more time waiting for things to dry than I did putting together!

I hope you enjoyed this project and that it gave you some ideas of what can be done with this months mixed media kit! Make sure you subscribe to our blog and YouTube Channel so you can always be kept up-to-date on kit releases and sample projects!
