Tres Jolie Kit Club–Tag Journal–January 2023 Cards, Tags, & More Kit

Hey, y’all! Hope you had a wonderful New Year celebration – whether it was out and about, or at home in jammies like me!

The best part of a new month and a new year is the new Tres Jolie Kits! YAY! And January is starting out fan-tab-u-lous-ly! I absolutely love the colors and styles that the kits are bringing this month. So, to get you started with your Cards, Tags, & More Kit, I have a little tag journal/booklet for you I made using some up-cycled packaging for the covers and decorated with the 3Quarter Designs “Imagine If” papers from the kit.

jan23-tagJournal-01

I have a video for you that covers what and how I did what I did that you can check out to recreate your own tag journal or just watch to pull some ideas from to expand upon!

jan23-tagJournal-02

I started my process by cutting up the packaging from a carton of canned beverages into approximately 5”x7” pieces, leaving the end flaps in place on two of the four pieces to create my pockets with (they measure 5”x7”-ish with the flaps folded up!)

Since my entire idea was about creating a vintage “pieced-together” look, it didn’t matter in the slightest if my cuts were straight or if the pieces were exact! It just added to the overall design! Plus, I would be coming in and distressing the edges, so there was really no need for straight cuts!

On the two rectangles that I didn’t leave the flap on for the pocket – the outside layers of the cover pieces – I used the two embossing folders from the Tim Holtz “Book Cover Set” to give them some texture. Then, I used some soft matte gel to glue my inner (the pieces with the flap) and outer (the embossed pieces) together, making sure to fill in my embossing so as I worked, it would un-emboss!

Once the gel had dried, I distress my edges and used some “Ground Espresso” stain to dye my journal covers. After that had dried, I tore the pieces of paper I wanted to add to the covers, added the same embossing, lined up the embossed areas, and glued them into place.

jan23-tagJournal-03

For the inside layers, because I wanted to make sure the pockets were well attached, I stitched my pocket (edges) to the background paper first – then I used some double-sided tape to really make sure I had good adhesion to the journal cover.

jan23-tagJournal-04 jan23-tagJournal-12 jan23-tagJournal-07

Once I had the bits of paper and fabric scraps picked out that I wanted to use and added my decorative stitching, finishing up the journal was a quick process – it was just a matter of stitching and gluing everything in place!

jan23-tagJournal-05 jan23-tagJournal-13 jan23-tagJournal-09

So I would have a “finished” look on both sides of the covers and flaps, I wouldn’t stitch the papers directly to the cover on both sides – I would only do direct stitching on one side. Then, for the other side, I would add my stitching to the paper(s) and glue them in place. This way I wouldn’t have any rough holes where the needle came through.

I really didn’t have any rhyme or reason when it came to creating all the little clusters and collage-ish pieces, I just grabbed up from the bits I had picked out, layered them up, added some of the flowers and some stitches, and just created what I felt like!

I had the same process for my tags, I created random-sized tags, created my clusters for them, then used some Fabri-Tac to make sure they stayed put! I didn’t want to stitch my clusters to my tags for a couple of reasons – the first reason being purely aesthetic – I didn’t want rough holes from the needle – the second reason is that I created a couple of ledger printables to add to the backs so notes would be able to be written on [the back of] the tags easier! (Well, easier for me, because I can’t write in a straight line on a blank surface to save my life!)

jan23-tagJournal-14 jan23-tagJournal-20

To add some extra dimension to a few of the fussy cut pieces, I gave them a layer of Glossy Accents and after they had dried completely, I added a few cracks to really create an aged appearance.

jan23-tagJournal-15 jan23-tagJournal-08

For the two tags that have the deep purple satin fabric as their pulls, I added stitching up and down them to keep that fabric from fraying. I may not have been able to tear that satin fabric, but once it wants to fray, it just keeps on going!

jan23-tagJournal-16 jan23-tagJournal-18

Then, just for these two tags, I stitched the pulls directly to the tops for the extra bit of security with that slippery fabric.

jan23-tagJournal-17 jan23-tagJournal-19

For the tags that have the variety of cotton-blend fabrics as their pulls, I didn’t sew them up like I did the satin ones, because although they can fray, they don’t quite do it all on their own the way the satin does! Then, to attach them to the tops, I just used my Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher and popped in a couple of staples crossed over each other like an “X.”

jan23-tagJournal-06 jan23-tagJournal-10

Thank you for joining me today! I hope you enjoyed this Tag Journal and it gave you some ideas of what you can create using this month’s Cards, Tags, & More Kit and some up-cycled packaging!

Tres Jolie Kit Club–November Mood Board + Mixed Media Kit

Hey, y’all! This week I grabbed up the Tres Jolie Kit Club November 2022 Mixed Media Kit, the burlap flowers from the Scrapbooking Kit, and a couple items from my stash to create a fabulous fall décor piece!

The only mediums I used for color were the four Stencil Butters that came in the kit – it was all just a matter of how I mixed and layered them to create the different shading.

Make sure you check out the video to catch all the details of what I did to bring my cornucopia to life!

Tres Jolie Mood Board

nov22-moodboard

This project really was rather simple – I let the stencil butter and the texture powder do the heavy lifting for me!

welcomeCornicopia-02

I didn’t use any gesso on the surface because I didn’t want too many layers that may make it more difficult for me to see the laser-cut details on the Tres Jolie cornucopia base. The first thing I did was grab up some artist’s tape and tape off the border between the edge of the filling and the basket, then I brushed a thin coat of the Chocolate Stencil Butter all over the basket. To start getting some detail built up, I mixed some of the Chocolate Stencil Butter with some texture powder and used some small round brushes to create the raised areas of the basket – or the areas that I thought of as raised!

welcomeCornicopia-03

Since I had a little of that mix left, I brushed it onto the lower part of the base then used a baby wipe to clean it up – just leaving some of the color behind to start filling in the areas between all of the foliage and produce.

Once all of the Chocolate Stencil Butter had dried, I started working with the Fern in the same fashion. I mixed in some texture powder and started building up the apple and some of the foliage. Then, to create some variations in shading, I mixed in some of the Eggplant Stencil Butter for the pear, and to create the darkest of the green, I added some of the Terra Cotta and Chocolate. Then I just brushed the Fern Stencil Butter on straight from the jar to add the light areas to the apple and pear and some lighter highlights to the foliage.

I also wanted to add a little more light coloring to the basket, so I brushed on my leftover mix, sprayed it down with water, and wiped up most of what was there – leaving just enough to add a hint of color besides the Chocolate.

welcomeCornicopia-04

The raised areas of the pumpkin are made up of some of the texture powder mixed with the Terra Cotta, and after that had dried, I came back with some of the Terra Cotta straight from the jar and filled in the smaller areas and I used my finger to rub a thin, uneven layer on top of the texture powder mix.

Since I loved the unevenness of using my finger to rub on the Stencil Butter, I decided to add some of the Terra Cotta to the cornucopia basket and rubbed on some of the Chocolate along the edges.

For all of the grapes (berries?) I used a cheap cake piping bag and tip with the Eggplant Stencil Butter and just created all of my “dots”! I think it made the process much quicker than if I had tried to use a brush. I just sprayed the surface of the Stencil Butter with water and made a little puddle to dip my finger in so I could smooth out any areas – so long as either my finger or the surface of the Stencil Butter was kept wet, my finger didn’t get stuck!! To really get those grapes to pop, I grabbed up my heat gun, and (for once) I purposely “overheated” my texture paste/stencil butter to create bubbles!

For the grape stems, I just mixed some texture powder, Eggplant, and Fern together and brushed it on. Then I watered it down and added that green-ish hew to the inside of the basket, and then used up the rest to give my metal “Welcome” a coating. Once again, I didn’t use any gesso, I just brushed my Stencil Butter directly on the surface. After that layer had dried, I used a soft brush and added some of the Eggplant to the upper half (and back) of the metal word.

welcomeCornicopia-05 welcomeCornicopia-07

For my stand, I up-cycled two of the hanging bars from a hanging file folder, bending one around to create the bottom and cutting the second in half to create the two uprights behind the cornucopia. I used some Gorilla Clear Grip to hold the metal in place, then came back with some 3D Matte Gel for extra adhesion and to hold the “Welcome” in place. I mixed some of the Chocolate Stencil Butter with some of the texture powder and some of the 3D Matte Gel for adhesive power, then brushed a layer onto the metal bars. I grabbed my heat gun up so I could get the surface of the mix dry, then added my flowers with some 3D Matte Gel.

After all of my gel had dried, I came back and just added some touch-up areas to the stand and word, then gave a coating of the Chocolate to the back for a more finished appearance.

welcomeCornicopia-06

That was it! It wasn’t a super complicated project, just a matter of mixing colors and trying to keep as much detail as possible! Thank you for joining me here in my corner, I hope you enjoyed this project and it gave you some ideas of what you can do with your Mixed Media Kit this month!

Tres Jolie Kit Club-July Cards, Tags, & More Kit-Folio

Hey, all! Welcome back to my corner!

Today I’m bringing you a folio as my second project this month using the Cards, Tags, & More Kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club. In addition to the papers from the kit, I used some chipboard, linen blend cardstock, lace, and an old pillowcase from my stash. I also created an extra notebook using my Mini Cinch to stick in. Were I to do it again, I’d think through that extra notebook a bit, but I decided to add it as an after thought! But I explain all that in the video, so be sure to check it out!

FRAMED-20210619_094601

Video:

First, here are the measurements I used:

Chipboard Measurements:

3x 9”x6”

1x 1-1/4”x9”

1x 1”x9”

Cardstock Measurements:

Front, Back, Flap: 8-3/4”x5-3/4”

Spines: 8-3/4”x1” & 8-3/4”x3/4”

Waterfall Measurements:

5-1/2”x4-1/2” on the 4-1/2” edge score at

1/2” to create a 5-1/2”x4” surface.

Folder Measurements:

12×12 Cardstock—score at 8-3/4” for pocket

fold; score at 5-3/4” for center fold.

Now for some close-ups:

Here are some shots of my cover. I love the fabric of this old pillowcase, and I’ve been waiting for the right project to come along to use it on; this folio was that project! I used two old buttons from my stash and some of the seam binding from the kit to create a simple closure.

FRAMED-20210619_094845

FRAMED-20210619_094823

On the center panel of the folio I added a waterfall for holding photos. I used the doily die from the kit to add a little extra to the top, and I have a couple of small magnets in place to hold the waterfall closed.

FRAMED-20210619_094638

FRAMED-20210619_094705

FRAMED-20210619_094724

In my folio I have two folders, one in each spine, with the second one having an extra fold-out envelope to go along with it. I also added some cardstock to the last panel to create a pocket.

FRAMED-20210619_094454

I used some wide lace and some E6000 to hold it tightly in place on the front panel. Originally I thought to put my (after-thought) notepad there, before I realized the folio wouldn’t close that way! So I decided to make the extra notepad a feature on the back panel, using a headband I got either at Dollar Tree or on clearance at Target to hold it in place.

FRAMED-20210619_094619

I hope you have time to check out the video to see how I put this folio together!

Thank you for joining us here at Tres Jolie! I hope you enjoyed this project and it gave you some ideas of what can be done using the items found in this months Cards, Tags, & More Kit.

Spring Butterfly Canvas-March 2021 MMP Mood Board Challenge

Hey, all! Look at me, I’m back! After having to take a little bit of a hiatus, I have managed to put a project together! It felt good to get paint stuck to me again. And, if we’re being honest, I really missed the smell of my Finnabair waxes!

For my first project to bring me back into the fray, I have a Spring Butterfly Canvas for the March 2021 Mixed Media Place Challenge. The canvas and doily are from a couple of years ago that was originally supposed to be something Christmas-y, but it failed. After the failure, I decided to coat the whole thing in Kilz spray primer and set the canvas aside until inspiration struck. That inspiration finally struck, over two years later! LOL!

photostudio_1617569837320-WM

I was worried I would have somehow forgotten everything I’ve learned over the years during my hiatus, but I’m happy to report I was able to access the creative storage in my brain and get this put together. Check out my process in the video below:

Check out this beautiful mood board for the challenge! It really got me in the mood for spring!

Now, how about some close-ups!

photostudio_1617569948905-WM

Here you can see I added some shine to the green lily using some of my Unicorn’s Hair Sparks paint. I didn’t add the Sparks to all of the flowers, I kept it to the green, white, & off-white flowers.

photostudio_1617569992720-WM

Here you can see how those gold microbeads really set off the wing! I love how my butterfly came out! So many layers of paint and wax! I was worried I wasn’t going to get it “just right,” until I came across my beads!

photostudio_1617570045670-WM

Here is the whole butterfly! You can see how the color changes depending on the light. Even though this photo was taken straight on, with the light coming from the right, the left wing shows up as more purple, and the shine really stands out!

photostudio_1617569902387-WM

Look at those beautiful glass beads! I didn’t need a lot and I love how they give an almost magical look to the piece!

Thank you for joining me here in my little corner! Hopefully, it won’t be too long before I have another project up for you!

Tres Jolie Kit Club-December Mixed Media Kit-Bottle Brush Display

Hey, all! Welcome back to my corner!

Due to life, this will be my final project for the Tres Jolie Kit Club, but I’m sure you’ll find the incoming design team to be very inspirational. As my final project, I used the rest of the ornaments I made for the first project to make a bottle brush tree display.

20201130_092902-FRAMED

Since I already had the ornaments made up, this project went together rather quickly and easily! Check out my video to see the process:

Video:

20201130_093018-FRAMED

I used the last bit of clay I had to cover an up-cycled jar, attached the ornaments, gessoed and painted, added some of the PearlEX powders, and finished them off with some of the glitter. Easy peasy!

Tres Jolie Kit Club-September Mixed Media Kit-Spinel Panel

Hey, all! Welcome back to my corner!

This week I’m bringing you a little panel I created using items from the Tres Jolie Kit Club’s September Mixed Media Kit and items from my stash!

DSC_0012-FRAMED

The script on my background is from the Finnabair “Read My Letter” stencil from my stash, but I did use the TCW Gel from this month’s kit with it.

This project went together rather quickly and easily, to see how it was done, check out my video!

Video:

DSC_0017-FRAMED DSC_0014-FRAMED

After I had all the parts I wanted glued down to my background (the TCW Gel from the kit makes a great glue!) I coated it all with some white gesso, then started adding on my mediums; starting with the Lindy’s Gang from the kit.

DSC_0016-FRAMED DSC_0018-FRAMED

I mixed the beads from the kit with more of the TCW Gel and brushed them onto the Prima flower vine. It makes me think of water droplets on the petals!

DSC_0013-FRAMED

As you saw in the video, I was able to use items from previous Tres Jolie Kits to put this panel together! I love the fact that at the “end” of my Mixed Media Kit I have mediums left to add into my stash and use at a later date!

I hope you enjoyed this project and it gave you some ideas of what can be done with items from this month’s Mixed Media Kit!

Tres Jolie Kit Club-June 2020 Mixed Media Kit-Altered Box

Hey, all! Welcome back to my blog!

Today I’m bringing you my third, Tres Jolie Kit Club, Mixed Media Kit project of June, an altered box. I’ve been keeping this box around since I ate the candy that was in it back in December. I knew I’d eventually find a way I wanted to use it!

DSC_0001-FRAMED

It took me building up a few layers of mediums to get the look I wanted, check out the video below to see how it all (finally!) came together.

DSC_0005-FRAMED DSC_0006-FRAMED

To the lid of the box, I added some ReneaBouquets Beautiful Board & “Candy” (flatbacks), cabochons, resin flowers from my stash, and some of the glass glitter that had come in the April 2020 Mixed Media Kit. For the roses, I used Lindy’s Magical Powder to give them their color, and the Gilding Polish on the cabochons.

DSC_0009-FRAMED

You can see how I made a double crackle effect by layering some Tim Holtz “Crazing” Distress Medium (from my stash) on top of the Cosmic Shimmer Crackle Paste from this month’s kit. Then, to really bring out the “Crazing” cracks, I rubbed in some of the Cosmic Shimmer Metallic Gilding Polish from the kit.

DSC_0008-FRAMED

I hope you enjoyed this project, and that it gave you some ideas of what the mediums can do that came with this month’s kit! I’ll see you again in July!

Tres Jolie Kit Club-May 2020 Mixed Media Kit-Summer Vase

Hey, all! Welcome back to my blog! Today my Tres Jolie Kit Club project is a summer vase using an upcycled jar, mediums from the mixed media kit, and papers from April’s Cards, Tags, & More Kit!

DSC_0001-FRAMED-SQUARE

I absolutely loved the Ciao Bella papers that came in April’s Cards, Tags, & More Kit! I loved, loved, loved the lemons with the dark blue! And it worked out that the Little Birdie wax in this month’s Mixed Media Kit was a perfect complement! Check out my video to see this summer vase come together!

Video:

DSC_0004-FRAMEDDSC_0008-FRAMED

After I coated the jar with the Little Birdie “Golden Glaze,” wrapped the papers around the jar, and adhered the image to the lid, I used Tim Holtz’s “Crazing” Medium (from my stash) as my topcoat. I then rubbed the Little Birdie wax all over, giving the “Golden Glaze” paint a blue hue and really bringing out the “cracks” from the “Crazing”!

DSC_0003-FRAMED

The lid and lace are a permanent part of the piece! I used E6000 & some gel medium to hold it where I wanted, at the angle I wanted!

DSC_0006-FRAMED

For the most part, I will try to upcycle anything! Who knows how old this jar was, but it has found a new purpose!
