Tres Jolie Kit Club–August 2023 Cards, Tags, & More Kit

Hey, y’all! I hope the weather this month hasn’t been too bad where you are. Fires in Maui and Canada, a tropical storm hitting Southern California, a massive steam cooker over the southern and mid-western United States, 100°F (37.8°C) waters around Florida, and hurricanes forming in the Atlantic – just to name a few of the weather incidents. I think it would be almost easier to make a list of where the weather isn’t causing problems. Wherever you are, I hope you are staying safe!

If you need something to unwind with, give yourself a little crafty break and check out the notecards I created this week using the August Cards, Tags, More Kit (and a bit from the Mixed Media Kit plus one butterfly from the Scrapbooking Kit!) – then grab your scissors and glue and make some yourself! With the card and envelope blanks in the kit, all you really need to do is add a little decoration and you can get a few finished in a relatively short period of time. Be sure to check out my video for the details of how these came together!

PhotoRoom-20230823_164131_1

There really isn’t a lot to these quick notecards – a little adhesive, maybe a medium or two, and they are basically done! Since I wasn’t entirely sure where the project would take me, I started out by putting my patterned paper and some of the Dresden Trim on an adhesive sheet, just so I could turn my papers into quick peel-and-stick pieces then coated everything as well as the unfolded envelopes with clear gesso.

adhesiveSheet gesso

The “Thank You” card was the most involved because I used the stencil and Lindy’s Moon Shadow Mist from this month’s Mixed Media Kit on it. For the notecard, I used some clear embossing ink and powder from my stash with the Prima stencil from the Mixed Media Kit to create a resist on the surface, then sprayed the surface with the Moon Shadow Mist. I added a little stamp, a butterfly I had left from last week’s project, and the sentiment.

clearemboss lindys

For the “Thank You” envelope, I sprayed the Lindy’s through the stencil and added a little bit for blending on the top and bottom flap and some “splotches” with the stenciling. After everything had dried, I used the outline die to make a little window in each of the envelopes and then backed the windows with sections of patterned paper.

stencilenvie PhotoRoom-20230823_164132_4

For the “Hello” notecard, I just adhered a section of patterned paper, a few strips of the Dresden Trim, and a few of the smaller flowers from the kit to the card front. I had thought I would add more, but in the end, all I did was use the ink to stamp the sentiment. I inked the envelope front using a blending brush, added my patterned paper to the back of the window, and stamped the sentiment again.

PhotoRoom-20230823_164131_3

For my third and final notecard, I added a strip of wood plank patterned paper that had the light string print on it to the top edge, then decided to add some random lengths of the Dresden Trim to the lights! After all of that, the only thing I felt was needed was a sentiment – which I stamped with clear embossing ink and added gold embossing powder to.

The “Congratulations” on the envelope was also done with gold embossing powder after I had my window backed and filled. I have a few more bits of the Dresden Trim on the solid patterned paper I used to back the window with, and then I added the decorative die cut into the window cut-out.

Thank you for joining me here at Tres Jolie, I hope you have a safe and happy rest of the year and beyond! I will be taking a break from Design Team work because as the temps drop around my neck of the woods, it’s going to become SUPER-DUPER busy! I will still be able to craft – I assume! – but I can’t make a guarantee I could fulfill Design Team requirements and deadlines! (I almost didn’t make it through August because events had unexpectedly longer timelines! Whew!)

Tres Jolie Kit Club–Slimline Cards–July 2023 Cards, Tags, & More Kit

Hey, y’all! I don’t know about my fellow Northern Hemisphere residents, but I’m already tired of summer! I don’t like all this heat at all! So, I’ve decided to stay indoors as much as possible and craft!

For my first Tres Jolie Kit Club July project I have a couple of slimline cards for you that I created using this month’s Cards, Tags, & More Kit plus the Botanical Stains from this month’s Mixed Media Kit. One card I made is still flat enough to fit in a #10 envelope, and the second one can fit, it’s just a bit tighter because of the flowers – and the flowers would probably be a lot flatter by the time they reached their destination!

Be sure to check out my video to see how these two cards quickly came together!

PhotoRoom-20230703_095042_4 PhotoRoom-20230703_095042_6

To prepare the ephemera I wanted to use on the flat card, I used the Marigold and Woad Blue Botanical Stains on the Asuka ephemera, and, after coating the Tres Jolie Chipboard butterfly with clear gesso, I added all three Botanical Stains to it.

card1-ephemera card1-ephemera2 butterfly

I cut the white cardstock down to 8”x9-3/8” and folded it in half to create a 4”x9-3/8” base. To give my card two layers, I cut 3/4” strips of the yellow sweater print patterned paper to create a frame as the bottom layer. My card front has a layer of gesso on it, and after adding some double-sided adhesive foam tape and some splatters (using Marigold Botanical Stain) to the patterned paper I attached it to the card base. After that, the only thing left to do was glue my ephemera pieces and sentiment in place.

card1-framelayer card1-foam card1-splatter
PhotoRoom-20230703_095042_2 PhotoRoom-20230703_095042_3

My second card, while thicker, was even simpler to create! I cut an “L” shape from the edge of one of the patterned papers to create an offset bottom layer of this card and attached it to the card base. For the card front, I added a few splatters of Black Bean Botanical Stain, and the double-sided adhesive foam, then attached the card front to the card base.

card2-framelayer card2-splatter

Originally I had picked a few bits of ephemera to use on the card front, but once I started playing around with everything I realized I preferred this card with just a couple of the Little Birdie flowers and a simple sentiment!

PhotoRoom-20230703_095042_1 PhotoRoom-20230703_095042_5

And there you have it, two quick and easy slimline cards!

Tres Jolie Kit Club–Father’s Day Card–June 2023 Cards, Tags, & More Kit

Hey, y’all! I hope your June has started out great! Schools have been – or are about to be – released for summer vacation, and Father’s Day is just 10 days away. This week, in honor of Father’s Day, I have a rather quick and easy card for you using the Hunkydory kraft stock found in this month’s Cards, Tags, & More Kit.

I used a stamp set and inks from my stash, but all of the “parts” for the card came from the kit! I was feeling rather “traditional” when starting this project, and I didn’t want to create a card that was overly complicated or ornate – but I didn’t have much more direction for myself, so I grabbed up the pieces from the kit I thought would work best for how I was feeling, and started playing around.

Be sure to check out my video to see how it came together and watch my confusion!

PhotoRoom-20230522_164302_11

The first thing I did to create this card is…

…stare at everything and try to get my thoughts together! Which was the hardest part of the project – getting my thoughts in order!

I knew I wanted to use the woodgrain kraft stock, but I wasn’t entirely certain what I actually wanted to do with it or how I wanted to decorate the card front. I also knew I preferred the star print bow for my “traditionally masculine” card, so I popped out the pieces I would need to create the bow, as well as the star print strip, the alpha I needed to spell “Dad” and the medallions to go with everything else “just in case”! I don’t know if I would have used any medallions at all if I hadn’t already inked them by the time I (finally) figured out what I was doing!

PhotoRoom-20230522_164301_7

I don’t have measurements for you, because I just eyeballed the size I thought looked good for the woodgrain kraft stock. However, I can tell you now after the fact, that the wood grain kraft stock is about 1/4” smaller (length and width), leaving approximately 1/8” of the card base as a border all the way around. I also eyeballed where I wanted the strip of the star print kraft stock, but because I used my cutting mat to keep it straight, I know the bottom edge is 1-1/4” up from the bottom edge of the woodgrain kraft. After I glued the strip into place, I tucked the ends under – cutting a little of the extra length off one end just because (although it worked out in my favor!) then used some “Gathered Twigs” Distress Ink around the perimeter – as well as on the alpha, bow, and medallions.

I used the excess star print strip I had cut off before tucking the ends under to connect my alpha – partly to keep them together because I kept losing one letter or another, and partly just to go with the overall design, since I hadn’t decided where “Dad” would be going yet!

PhotoRoom-20230522_164302_10 PhotoRoom-20230522_164301_2

I tried playing around with the alpha, bow, and medallions on the card front, but I just couldn’t get the bow to look right all by itself – and I really wanted to use the bow! In the end, I realized the card front was exactly what I wanted with just the inking, the strip of star print kraft, and the simplicity of “Dad,” so that’s how I left it before moving on to the envelope.

PhotoRoom-20230522_164302_12

I inked up the envelope with more “Gathered Twigs,” to coordinate with the vintage and “rustic” feel of the woodgrain kraft stock on the card front.

Originally I had adhered the bow and medallions on in a loose cluster formation, but I was still very unhappy with how everything was coming together and I thought maybe adding “Happy Father’s Day” to the envelope would tie everything together better – which is how I came to the decision to use my Tim Holtz “The Inspector” stamp set! I was originally just looking for alpha stamps to use – then I saw the man and the alpha just staring at me!

I used some “Timber Brown” StazOn for my first stamping of “The Inspector,” then added a couple of layers of “Gathered Twigs” Distress Ink on top before moving over to start the process of spelling out “Happy Father’s Day” with the alpha stamp block that also doesn’t have all 26 letters of the alphabet!

PhotoRoom-20230522_164301_5 PhotoRoom-20230522_164301_6

I started with the “H” in “Happy,” using my StazOn, but before repositioning the alpha block for the “A,” I used my “Gathered Twigs” to create a lighter background text block – then I continued stamping the rest of the phrase. For the two “P’s,” I used the “R’s” just making sure to keep the extra leg ink-free, and for the “Y’s,” I used upside-down “A’s” and the “I” to create the leg.

I traced over all of the letters in the phrase with my “Vintage Photo” Distress Marker, then I grabbed up a water bottle and sprayed everything down. The StazOn stayed put, and all the Distress Inks activated! After drying the envelope, I attached the bow tie and placed the medallions.

PhotoRoom-20230522_164301_3

Thank you for joining me here today! I hope you enjoyed this Father’s Day card and it gave you some ideas of what you can create using this month’s kit!

Tres Jolie Kit Club–Easel Cards!–April 2023 Cards, Tags, & More Kit

Hey, y’all! Have you played with your April Kits yet? Are they fabulous or what!?!? I absolutely love the “Happiness” line from LemonCraft found in this month’s Cards, Tags, & More Kit – so bright and cheery – perfect for your spring projects!

To kick off my April projects, I have a couple of easel cards for you! One is a 6”x6” “Thank You” card and one is a slimline “Happy Easter” card I created using a few pieces of Tres Jolie Chipboard from my stash, in addition to the Happiness papers! I used cardstock from my stash, and on the Easter card I added a little of the “Fairy Wings” paint from this month’s Mixed Media Kit, but all of the patterned papers, flowers, and fussy-cut bits and pieces are from the kit!

Make sure you check out my video to see how I put these together!

apr2023-easelCards-07

apr2023-easelCards-10 apr2023-easelCards-13 apr2023-easelCards-14

After I picked out the cardstock I wanted to use, I got started constructing my card base. The green cardstock isn’t heavy cardstock, I’d say it’s an average weight – about 65 lbs I think – but the “Natural” cover stock is much heavier – 130 lbs! You don’t need to use 130lb cover stock, but I love how sturdy it makes cards, so I keep it on hand! Since this card lies flat and the easels stand, you could easily use “regular” cardstock or patterned paper for your layers.

To try and make sure I am explaining my measurements as clearly as possible, I have some photos of the various pieces with their measurements! (Taking a snapshot of a video frame does come in handy sometimes!!)

This first set of photos shows the measurements for the 6”x6” card and the four easels that are on it. I cut the green cardstock in half, making a 6”x12” rectangle, then folded it in half along the long edge, easy-peasy! (My card is a top fold card, but you can have your fold wherever you want!) Then I cut two 5-3/4” squares out of my cover stock and glued them inside the base for the message to be written on, and on the front to add some contrast between the base and the easels.

For the easels, I cut four 5”x2-1/2” rectangles and folded them in half – these are the easel bases – and I cut four 2-1/2” squares to use as the easel fronts.

6x12base-measurements lightCardstock-measurements 6x6popups-measurements

All four of my easels have the fold at the top so they all stand up in the same direction – and to make the easel-making process a little easier to explain! With the fold at the top, you are going to want to fold the top flap of your easel in half along the diagonal – from one of the corners at the fold to one of the bottom corners. I have my easels set to face the outer edges, so I folded two from the top right to the bottom left, and two from the top left to the bottom right. (In the two photos showing the folds, I only used a scrap of the cover stock for visual purposes – so you could see easier than me trying to show green on green!)

cornerToCorner rightsidecard leftsidecard

Once your easels are folded how you want them, all that is left to do is add the 2-1/2” squares that make up the easel fronts. You don’t want to glue them all the way down, only to the bottom triangle of your folded cardstock – this is the whole easel – the part that will stand up to be shown off!

glue-drawing topSquare-1 topSquare

You can see in the next pictures that I made sure my easels were all facing how I wanted them before gluing them down to the card front!

easelsStanding

With the four easels glued down, all that I had left to do was pick out which patterned papers and fussy-cut pieces I wanted to use to decorate with.

In total, I cut eight 2-1/4” squares from two different patterned papers. I used the paper with the larger print to cover the section that will be seen while the easels are standing, and I used the paper with the smaller print on the easel faces so it wouldn’t be too overpowering when I came back and added the fussy cut flowers.

For the four squares with the larger pattern, I used an acrylic square to help me make sure the pattern I wanted would be showing!

patternedPaper-allEight patternedPaper-underneath2 patternedPaper-acrylicSquare

Once all of the “main” pieces were in place, it was just a matter of adding the final decorations and the sentiment.

To add a little dimension and contrast to the fussy cut pieces, I lightly inked the edges using the “Bamboo Leaves” ink from the kit, glued a few of the flowers together, then popped up the little collage pieces on some foam squares.

For my easel “stoppers,” I picked out four of the smaller, fussy-cut butterflies, backed them with some double-sided adhesive foam, cut off the excess foam, and topped them with some Diamond Glaze – in essence, I created custom “enamel dots” using the papers from the kit! Once the Diamond Glaze had dried completely, I stuck the butterflies down where I wanted the easels held.

apr2023-easelCards-08 apr2023-easelCards-11 apr2023-easelCards-12

Finally, it was time to add my sentiment! All I did is pick out the stamp I wanted to use from the set in the kit, ink it up, and stamp it to a couple of the small cut of pieces from the papers I had already used!

Then, to soften it up, I created a watered-down “puddle” of the “Bamboo Leaves” ink on my craft mat and used a water brush with the puddle of ink to lightly trace over the stamping. I fussy cut the sentiment out, added some foam to the back of the words, and then added the words to the top-right square.

Now on to the slimline Easter card! The building process for easel cards is – more or less – the same. It is really only a matter of which way you are going to have your easels facing! And, for this card, since I have my easels facing forward, I didn’t even have to make diagonal folds!

apr2023-easelCards-02 apr2023-easelCards-05 apr2023-easelCards-06

For my card base, I used the 130lb cover stock, cut it down to 8”x9-1/4”, and folded it in half along the shorter edge, to create a 4”x9-1/4” card. Then for some layering, I cut a 3-3/4”x9” rectangle from green cardstock to start building my card face.

slimlineBaseMeasurements slimlineBaseLayerOneMeasurements

For my three easels, I cut three 6”x2-1/4” rectangles to use as the bases and folded them in half along the long edge – making them 3”x2-1/4”.  I also added a score line and folded them at 1-1/2” to create the easel. Then, for the easel faces, I cut three 3”x2-1/4” rectangles.

I have the folds (at the 3” mark) for my easel at the top, and I added glue to the bottom rectangle that was created with the second fold at the 1-1/2” mark to attach my easel faces.

slimlineEaselFolded slimlineEaselGlue

To keep my three easels as centered as possible, I used a 3/4” wide strip of paper as a spacer along the edge of the green cardstock on the card base and lined my easels up along that strip. My easels are “on top of” each other – in other words, I didn’t add any horizontal space between the bottom of one easel and the top of the easel under it.

spacing slimlineEasels

Just because the patterned paper in the kit is an 8”x8” pad, doesn’t mean it can’t fit on a card that has a 9” tall face! After all, the diagonal of a square is longer than the two sides! In this case, from one corner to the opposite corner, it is a little over 11-1/4”, and since I didn’t need very wide strips – only 5/8” – everything fit just fine on the edge of the card front.

I had very minimal paper piecing required to get the front finished – only having to piece the background of the center easel together to get the “boards” how I wanted them.

I picked out the patterned papers I wanted to use to back my Tres Jolie Easter Egg Chipboard with and to use under the easels, backed the chipboard with the paper and trimmed the excess from the edges off, and cut the three pieces that will show when the easels are standing down to size!

I didn’t want too much decoration on the chipboard, so I just used the “Bamboo Leaves” ink and some water to add a bit of color to the eggs. Once I had the ink on, I decided I wanted to add a little something extra to the “Happy Easter” easel, so I gave a light brushing of the “Fairy Wings” paint (found in this month’s Mixed Media Kit) to the sentiment and popped on a few of the green flowers from the kit.

Tres Jolie Kit Club–Slimline Cards!-March 2023 Cards & Mixed Media Kits

Hey, y’all! How’s your March coming along, and why does March always seem like it is at least 62 days long? I swear it feels like it should be closer to the middle of the month than it is!! Anyhow…

This week I have a couple of slimline cards for you I created using the March Cards, Tags, & More Kit and the mediums and stencil from the Mixed Media Kit. These cards are relatively quick and easy – waiting for the texture paste to dry was the longest part! Make sure to check out my video to see what I did!

mar23-cards-01

Pretty easy, right? With the wonderfully beautiful Stamperia papers and chipboard, these cards are quick and easy to put together! I used some cover stock for my card bases, and some craft foam as the base for my card fronts – just building the layers of paper and ephemera on top of the foam.

mar23-cards-06 mar23-cards-02

From the moment I saw the damask-ish print paper in the Stamperia stack, I knew I wanted to put on a card front – I just love the color and pattern! I also knew I wanted to use that little section of script print on a card, so that’s what I put together for my “Soulmate” card front! For the “Greetings” card front, I used the cut-offs from the damask-ish paper as a bottom border and a piece of the cover stock I used for the bases above it – also glued to a rectangle of craft foam.

I didn’t start out with measurements in mind; I was just working with what I had! However, since measurements can sometimes be helpful, I have added a couple of photos here with the “Soulmate” card front – the “Greetings” card was made with what I had left!

measurement-1 measurement-2

Once I had the papers glued down and let the glue dry completely, I coated the card fronts and the larger chipboard I planned on using with some clear gesso, grabbed up the stencil from the kit, some texture paste from my stash, and added some stenciling to the backgrounds. With the stencil still in place and the texture paste still wet, I started adding Lindy’s mediums. I didn’t want to mix the mediums into the texture paste, because I didn’t want a solid, even color! For the “Soulmate” card front, I spritzed some of the Moon Shadow Mist on the top-ish area of stenciling, sprinkled on the Magical Powder closer to the bottom then just scraped everything together – creating a little bit of a  gradient effect. For the “Greetings” card front, I only used the Magical Powder, but I made sure to sprinkle it on unevenly so there would be some variation in shading after everything had dried.

mar23-cards-03 mar23-cards-09

I did the same basic technique with the stencil and texture paste on the larger chipboard pieces I was going to be adding to the card fronts – the only difference was with the vase. For the stenciling on the vase, I didn’t add any of the Magical Powder or scrap the Moon Shadow Mist after I added a couple of splatters, I just let it soak into the texture paste a little and carefully soaked up some of the larger drops before removing the stencil.

mar23-cards-04 mar23-cards-10

Once the stenciling had dried on the chipboard pieces, I decided I needed to add some of the gold to the intricate edge on the Tres Jolie Chipboard – the off-white of the original just stood out too much! I didn’t want a heavy coating, I just wanted to add some shine and create a smoother transition between the chipboard and stenciling – so I grabbed the gum arabic and magical powder, added a bit of water, and brushed it on.

mar23-cards-05 mar23-cards-08

After all the mediums had dried, it was only a matter of adding the chipboard flowers, phrases, and ribbon/seam binding! I used two layers of craft foam to lift the vase off the background, added some of the smaller chipboard flowers to the flowers in the vase for some depth, added a small length of the seam binding to the “Soulmate” tag – tucking the ends under the edges of the card front – and glued everything down to my base!

I glued the chipboard flowers flat on the base of the “Greetings” card, added a single layer of craft foam under the Tres Jolie Chipboard to give it a little lift, and tucked in a few of the flowers from the pack in the kit after I added some gum arabic/Lindy’s “paint” to them. I tied a bow in the last bit of seam binding I had, added it between the chipboard butterfly and the “Greetings” sentiment (backed with a small piece of craft foam), and glued the card front to the card base.

And that was it! Two cards are done in a relatively short amount of time!

Tres Jolie Kit Club–Cards!-January 2023 Cards & Mixed Media Kits

Hey, y’all! This week I have some super easy cards for you – even if they are mixed media cards – since the Lava Paste is made to be heat dried!

I’m going to make this a short overview post, mostly because there aren’t all that many steps involved! If you want to see the full process, make sure you check out the video!

jan23-cards-01

Originally I had only planned on making the two slimline cards, but I decided to add in the little notecard when I thought of something I wanted to try while working on the other two!

jan23-cards-05 jan23-cards-06

The backgrounds were super easy, for the butterfly card, I coated the cardstock with some clear gesso before stenciling on my lava paste, and for the dragonfly card, I added the lava paste directly to the cardstock, then after I had dried the lava paste, I sprayed a coat of Workable Fixatif over everything. This way I could test a couple of different techniques with the lava paste and the Pixie Dusts in this month’s Mixed Media Kit.

Once the backgrounds were dried, I sprinkled on some of the Pixie Dusts, watered them down some, and then did some light drying just to keep the colors where I had decided I liked them and to keep the paper from getting too wet, then I just set them off to finish air drying. (There may have been some coatings on them, but gesso and Fixatif aren’t made to just sit with puddles on them!!)

jan23-cards-04 jan23-cards-07

It was during all of this that I thought of a third technique I wanted to try – adding the Pixie Dust to the wet Lava Paste and adding just a light mist of water to activate it! When I heated the Lava Paste, it created some lovely veining with the colors as the paste expanded and poofed up! I also wanted to see how the dust would work directly on the background without any type of gesso/sealer, so I added it on top of my [now dried] Lava Paste, used a soft brush to spread it around, misted it with some water and then just let it dry.

jan23-cards-02 jan23-cards-03

With my background done, it was just a matter of adding the bits and pieces to the card fronts. I added a layer of the Lava Paste to the backs of the cutout pieces and the sentiments because I figured it would be a nice way to give those pieces some lift and a little support to the cardstock! I also added some of the paste to the edges of all of the pieces, then it was just a matter of sticking all the embellishments down and adding a few sequins from my stash.

Thank you for joining me today on the blog, I hope these cards gave you some ideas of what you can make using the January Cards, Tags, & More Kit and Mixed Media Kit!
