Tres Jolie Kit Club – Mini Blank Journal – August 2023 Cards, Tags, & More Kit

Hey, y’all! I’m up on the blog today with a mini sketchbook/journal for you! I created the cover of this mini-book using the papers, notecards, ink, die set, and Tres Jolie Chipboard found in this month’s Cards, Tags, & More Kit. I don’t know why, but as soon as I saw the die in the kit this month I knew it needed to become the spine of a book – plus I thought the size of the notecards were perfect to create a cute little cover!

Overall this isn’t a difficult project, it was really a lot more “fiddly” work – measuring, cutting, and stitching. Make sure you check out the video to see how I put my mini-sketchbook together!

PhotoRoom-20230724_114318_9

The first thing I needed to do to create my cover is to piece together some of the patterned paper so it would be large enough! Truth be told, the thought process looked a little like this:

Hmmm….six inch paper, six-ish inch notecards…that’ll be good! Oh…wait…I need it to be able to wrap around.

So, after coming to that realization, I cut my main cover papers down, using the wreath print as my guide because I wanted to keep the wreath centered on the front cover. Fortunately, the circle of the wreath is 3 inches, and that made my work a little easier because I had already planned on wrapping the spine paper over 1 inch to the front and back covers.

I cut along one edge of the circle – the edge that would go against the spine papers – and left about 4 inches – 3 inches to show on the cover, and 1 inch to wrap around the front edge. For the top and bottom paper piecing, I cut off as little as I thought was possible that would leave as much foliage intact, but also leave enough to make sure I could securely adhere the 1-1/2” strips I needed to wrap the top and bottom of the cover.

For the spine, because I would still need a little to wrap around the top and bottom, I used two sheets of the wood plank patterned paper and lined the plank print up a little, but didn’t cut down the height until the two pieces were glued together so I could work from the edge of the overlap – because I wanted to keep the seam centered along the spine.

cover-pieced spine

Before I glued the main patterned paper for the cover to the extension pieces, I inked along the top and bottom edges to add some definition between the two layers. After the pieces were glued together, I added a couple of layers of matte varnish to help seal and protect the papers.

When it came time to add the cover papers to the notecards, I marked on the notecards where the edge closest to the spine would need to line up and where the edge of the main cover patterned paper needed to line up to be centered on the cover.

PhotoRoom-20230724_114318_4 coverAlignment

For my spine, after the glue had dried where I had pieced the papers together, I used the decorative die from the set in the kit to cut through the wood plank paper. I backed the wood plank paper with a 1-1/2” wide piece of patterned paper decorated at the top with some of the Dresden Trim and added a little glue to hold everything together before coming back with a matte varnish to help seal the edges of the die cut so it will (hopefully!) not get caught on anything.

I cut my spine paper to a total width of 3-3/4”, 1-1/2” for the spine, 1” to wrap around the front and back cover, and, since I had marked where the cover papers needed to line up with the spine paper 1” from the edge, that left me a 1/8” gap between the spine and notecards to allow the cover to open and close. Then I just made sure everything was glued down and wrapped the edges around creating the cover.

dresdenTrim-spine PhotoRoom-20230724_114318_1

For my endpapers, I needed a total of 8” to cover the inner cover and create the first and last pages of the sketchbook. Since the patterned papers in the kit are 6”x6”, I once again did a little paper piecing. I kept one of the sheets at their full 6” width, then added the extra 2” I needed with cut-off from a second sheet of patterned paper – cut to 2-1/2” so I could glue the two pieces together.

I used the full six stands of some off-white embroidery floss and added a simple straight stitch along the seam for a little extra interest and texture – eyeballing how far from the seam I wanted the stitch line, and pre-poking my holes 1/4” apart so my stitches would be even. After the stitching was complete, I added some of the Dresden Trip to the back side of my stitching since that was the side that was rougher from the awl and needle going through.

Back Endpaper

For the blank pages in my mini sketchbook, I used 9”x12” mixed media paper. I was able to cut two 5-11/16”x8” pages from each sheet of mixed media paper, and in the end, I ended up with 16 signatures that had four pages each to get the 1-1/2” text block I needed for the spine. The size of my pages was determined by the size of my cover, so when I was determining the size needed I cut them to allow about 2mm from the top, bottom, and outer edges of the cover.

mixedMediaPaperSize mixedMediaPapers-againstCover

I created a 5-hole template for all of the hole poking, got all of my signatures ready, then started sewing my text block together using two strands of embroidery floss. I used a traditional method for stitching my signatures together, and if you are familiar with Coptic Stitching, it is a very similar technique. You can find a step-by-step pictorial tutorial from Nik the Booksmith here and a video tutorial from Sea Lemon here. If you don’t have a means to trim your text block together and you want to try and even the edges out a little, you can use a sanding block and some gentle sanding. It may not create “perfect” edges, but it can help some!

template sigHoles sewTextblock

With the text block stitched together, I added my endpapers, clamped everything together, and added a thin layer of PVA glue, then my Super (traditional bookbinding cloth), followed by a couple more thin layers of PVA glue. I worked in thin layers of glue and allowed about 5 minutes of dry time in between so I wouldn’t saturate the text block or have glue leak between the signatures and accidentally glue everything together. Before getting it set in the cover, my final addition to the text block was some homemade headbands – mostly because I came across them while I was searching through all my book-making papers and decided that if I made them, I should use them sometime!

glueSuper PhotoRoom-20230724_114318_3

The final decorative touches to my cover were to add a piece of Tres Jolie Chipboard to the front spine edge and stamped Journal across the center of the front cover paper (I just used some artist masking tape to hold my alpha stamps together so I could keep them mostly straight!). I sealed the chipboard with some matte varnish, then used Glossy Accents to attach it. I sprayed my stamping with some Workable Fixatif, then added a final coat of matte varnish to the cover.

Tres Jolie Kit Club–Tag Flip!-June 2022 Cards, Tags, & More Kit

Hey, y’all! I have my last project using this month’s Cards, Tags, & More Kit from Tres Jolie Kit Club for you today, a little, zipper-closed, tag flip book that is just perfect for jotting down notes to yourself – things you want to remember – ephemera you may want to tuck away, or just a little place to doodle in. This project is completely customizable – you can use whatever materials and colors you want. And the best part? It doesn’t even have to make sense to anybody else! It’s all you!

tagFlip-jun22ctm-04

I had quite a pile of tags already die-cut from my previous two Cards Kit projects this month that my original thought was to make a tag flip booklet that went on a book ring, but then I started laying out all my tags, and realized that what I really wanted to do was make something a little more interactive – and this was the result! Check out the video to see how I put it all together.

Video:

tagFlip-jun22ctm-01 tagFlip-jun22ctm-02

I still had a lot of die cuts left from my Memory Dex Cards, so I added them to this project. Both the butterfly on the front cover and the flower on the back were cut out of the leftover handmade paper I had from my Junk Journal project that was posted on the 9th. I added some of the Eyelet Outlet Jewels to my butterfly body and popped on a few of the Prima flowers. You can see the random, wayward stitching that I used for my zipper, who knows what kind of stitching I would have used if I had thought about a zipper closure before putting everything together!

tagFlip-jun22ctm-03

Want to add a bit of personalization to your cover material? For me, a paint pen was the way to go! A regular pen, or even a gel pen, wouldn’t work so well on this rough burlap, a marker would probably work some, but I think a paint pen was best because I can make dots just by holding the nib down and letting the paint pool.

tagFlip-jun22ctm-07 tagFlip-jun22ctm-05

I just grabbed up some washi tape I’ve had for years with quotes on it and ran it across all the back tags, then ran some silver dot washi across the top of the left side of the booklet, and the bottom of the right side to fill in a little more and give some shine. I added brads to my tag holes – mostly to use them up – and added random stitching on my KaiserCraft white cardstock tabs to give them some color.

tagFlip-jun22ctm-12

I had these little metal flips in my stash and decided to add them in with some silver brads to hold little stacks of the rest of the tags that weren’t sewn in as part of the booklet. You can also see that for some more personalization, I colored in the outer edge of my tab with a gel pen. No rhyme or reason, just grabbing up a pen that I felt like using at the moment! Having an assortment of pens comes in handy because it can also be a way to express the mood you’re feeling when adding to your booklet.

tagFlip-jun22ctm-11 tagFlip-jun22ctm-06

When it came time to put my third Cards Kit project of the month together, I found myself staring at tags and die-cuts I had already made on leftover handmade paper, and the beginning of an idea to do something that opened in more than one direction. I just started laying tags out, trying to build the “direction” of everything in my mind as I went, so I didn’t just make a booklet that had “pages” that turned from right-to-left. I cut off bits of the burlap and canvas to make flip-up, flip-downs, and flip-outs. When I ran my washi across, I wrapped it around the tags that were “pages” (not the ones made to flip up or down). I didn’t want to stamp on all of my tags, and I didn’t want to cover the whole surface – there needed to be someplace to write – so I left some of the tags bare and added in the rest of the tags I had cut.

tagFlip-jun22ctm-10 tagFlip-jun22ctm-09

With some of the smaller die cuts – either solid shapes or outlines/frames – that were from the KaiserCraft white cardstock, I added some of the silver polka-dot washi tape and some stitching around the edges. If it was just an outline, I folded the tape in half so it would stick to itself, and used it as the center of the die-cut, which was also folded in half.

tagFlip-jun22ctm-08

As you can see, there are loads of places to write little notes or tuck in bits of ephemera you want to keep!

Thank you for joining me here in my little corner, I hope you enjoyed this little tag flip booklet and it gave you some ideas for making your own personalized little booklet.

Tres Jolie Kit Club–Anything Book–October 2021 Cards, Tags, & More Kit

Hey, all! Welcome back to my corner!

For my final Tres Jolie Kit Club project of October, I’m bringing you an “Anything Book.” I call it an anything book because you could easily use it as a mini-album, mini art journal, mini notebook, etc. Personally, I really wanted a mini art journal with pockets and flip-outs.

FRAMED-20210919_173350

My inspiration for this project came from Pinkstrawberryz “No Binding Easy Mini Album.” It was just one of those “You might like” recommendations that randomly popped up on YouTube, so I decided to have a look! As soon as I watched the video I had ideas brewing! Check out my video to see how I put my Anything Book together. (Below the video you will find photos of the inside and the measurements for my pages.)

Video:

Here is a look at some of the pages I started preparing:

FRAMED-20211003_110402 FRAMED-20211003_110424

After my book was together I used clear and white gessoes to prepare the pages. With my gesso dry, I was then able to start laying down mediums to prepare working backgrounds. I just grabbed up various paints and started laying them down! To make the book cover, I grabbed up some burlap trim, cut it to length, and stitched it in place during assembly.

FRAMED-20211003_110443 FRAMED-20211003_110455

Some areas have acrylic paint and some have watercolors. I started drawing on a couple of the pages—flowers in some places, and this face above. I also grabbed a few pens and outlined the flowers from the paper pack.

FRAMED-20211003_110513 FRAMED-20211003_110527

I didn’t always use a brush with my paints, some times I just used a palette knife to scrape it on! I also grabbed up some of my Dina Wakely Scribble Sticks and added some…well…scribbles! I have a short flip-though of my mini art journal (as far as it had been “finished” at the time of filming!) over on my Instagram post for this project.

Art Journal-Hero & Paint-June MTW Challenge

Hey, all! Welcome back to my corner!

Today I have an Art Journal spread I created for the June More Than Words Challenge “Hero & Paint.”

WM-20210622_201758

I wasn’t sure if I’d come up with something this month for the MTW Challenge, I wasn’t feeling very layout-ish, and I wasn’t able to really narrow down a personal hero. One day I just pulled out my DWM Journal and grabbed a few brighter paints. Then I sat there staring! I think things finally came together when I got a “picture” in my mind of some stenciling. I didn’t have anything like what I was picturing, so I cut one out of some heavy cardstock.

Video:

June 2021 Main

I suppose, if you wanted to really get down to the nitty-gritty, I think I had problems thinking of a hero because I tend to lean to a “I’ll do it myself” attitude. I’m not saying I won’t let people do things for me, I just find doing it myself faster! LOL!

Some close-ups of the spread:

WM-20210622_201853

The silver on the background is from sheets of Prima Run-On Foils. I used my homemade stencil with some Finnabair “Gold Dust” Jewel Effect Paste, and then freehanded some paint highlights!

WM-20210622_201840 WM-20210622_201903 WM-20210622_201944

I used some DWM “Eggplant” & “Lemon” that I had from the October 2020 Tres Jolie Kit Club Mixed Media Kit, and some Vicki Boutin “Juicy Pear.”

WM-20210622_201949

All of the papers have been in my “scraps” pile for ages, and none of them had the border with the manufacturer on them anymore, so I couldn’t even begin to guess where they came from now!

WM-20210622_201910 WM-20210622_201935

I just tore a bit of corrugated cardboard from a box, coated it in some DWM Gesso I’ve had since the April 2019 Tres Jolie Mixed Media Kit (I had an open container way back then already, and with black gesso, I’ve learned a little bit goes a long way!); I then layered my stamped papers, punched circles, and label on top of the cardboard.

WM-20210622_202023

I hope you enjoyed this project. I love getting my Art Journal out because I gives me a chance to do a project without always having to plan ahead or prepare too much! With just a little guideline, “Hero & Paint” I was able to do a project and relax!

Tres Jolie Kit Club-October Mixed Media Kit-Art Journaling

Hey, all! Welcome back to my corner!

Today I am bringing you an Art Journal spread I created using the mediums found in this month’s Mixed Media Kit from the Tres Jolie Kit Club.

I find Art Journaling can be freeing and relaxing. There isn’t a need to have a plan going in, I think it’s impossible to “make a mistake,” and you can practice with your mediums!

DSC_0011-FRAMED

In the video I go over the different items (also listed at the end of this post) I used to make this spread and I show the process involved.

Video:

DSC_0012-FRAMED DSC_0013-FRAMED

I first coated the pages in my art journal with some clear gesso, then started layering my stencils for the background – drying in between each layer. After my background was finished I just started drawing! The paints are no longer water reactive once they are dry, so I only worried about using my Workable Fixatif when I wanted my Stabilo pencils to stay put!

DSC_0021-FRAMED DSC_0015-FRAMED

I didn’t worry about trying to make everything “perfect,” I just went along adding color and designs as I felt the “need” for them. After the background stenciling I added my leafy vines, mushrooms, and leaf. I mixed some of the Nuvo Sparkle Spray with some clear gesso to make it more of a paint and (tried) using it to create some shadow effects and to color my leaf some. After I had it painted on I watered the remaining mixture down some and splattered it across the pages. The final step to the spread was to draw on the border around the pages.
